About Appalachia Service Project
ASP provides one of the most rewarding structured service opportunities in the nation — bringing thousands of volunteers from around the country to rural Central Appalachia to repair homes for low-income families. Appalachia Service Project is a Christian ministry, open to all people, that inspires hope and service through volunteer home repair and replacement in Central Appalachia.
Responsibilities
ASP summer staff members work in teams of four, running the volunteer program at an ASP summer center. Each week, summer staff welcome a new group of volunteers and make sure that they provide quality home repairs to Appalachian families.
Summer staff members help volunteers develop meaningful relationships with those families, while making sure the volunteers’ needs—from food to tools and materials to rest and encouragement—are being met. Summer Staff serve as mentors and role models for the middle and high school youth volunteer who participate in ASP’s mission.
Every evening when the volunteers gather at the center tired and fulfilled, summer staff lead spiritual programs to help them volunteers unpack their experience while learning more about Appalachia and themselves. Key Responsibilities

In addition to the collective responsibilities, each staff member is assigned one of the following positions:
Center Director (1+ years experience required)
Operations Coordinator
Logistics Coordinator
Communications Coordinator
Your summer staff experience can fulfill internship credit for your college or university!
Requirements
Must be 18 years old and at least one year removed from high school
Willing to obtain CPR and First Aid certifications
Valid driver’s license and driving record that is acceptable to ASP’s insurer
Excellent communication skills
The desire to serve volunteers, homeowners, your staff and God
Ability to serve as a positive mentor and role model for teenage and young adult volunteers
Be able to work the entire summer mid-May through early August. Some exceptions can be made and should be indicated on the application.
Compensation
First time summer staff will receive $4,900 total, paid bi-weekly over the eleven-week employment cycle. An additional 7% increase is provided for each subsequent summer a staff member serves.
ASP provides all summer staff with housing, food, and access to an ASP vehicle for work use.
Summer Staff will also receive a stipend for laundry and a weekly allowance for food, drink, candy, etc.
Internship credit can usually be provided as well.
