Position Summary:
The Sheep Herdsman at The Sheep Discovery Center is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the processing of sheep, while maintaining a safe, calm, and hygienic work environment. This role requires strong leadership skills, attention to detail, and a deep understanding of sheep processing procedures and industry regulations. The Sheep Herdsman ensures that all activities related to sheep processing are executed efficiently, safely, and according to established quality standards. Direct supervision will be provided by the Livestock Manager accompanied by comprehensive on-the-job training.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Lead and supervise a team of 2-3 members in the processing staff, including training, assigning tasks, setting performance expectations, and providing feedback.
- Effectively communicate current pen counts to relevant parties and conduct sheep gathering activities.
- Assisting with breeding procedures, administering vaccinations, and loading sheep for transportation.
- Adapt to and overcome design challenges as they arise.
- Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and best practices, maintaining a safe working environment for employees and minimizing the risk of accidents or injuries.
- Implement and enforce quality control measures to maintain high standards throughout the processing operations, including inspections, monitoring of processes, and adherence to industry regulations and company policies.
- Oversee the maintenance and efficient operation of processing equipment, ensuring its proper functioning, and coordinating repairs or replacements as needed. Monitor facility cleanliness and sanitation standards.
- Monitor stock levels of processed sheep products, ensuring accurate recording of inventory and timely replenishment.
- Utilize data management programs for efficient record keeping and prepare regular reports on operational performance, efficiency, and any improvements needed.
- Stay up to date with industry regulations, food safety standards, and animal welfare practices, ensuring compliance in all processing activities.
Qualifications/ Requirements:
- High School diploma/GED
- Prior experience working with livestock (recommended, but not mandatory).
- Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database software.
- Proficiency in Spanish (recommended, but not mandatory).
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
Work Environment:
The employee is expected to work in conditions with high levels of noise and exposure to airborne particles. They may be required to work near moving mechanical parts, in outdoor weather conditions, and in high, precarious places. May be required to use a respirator and would need to undergo pulmonary function and respirator fit tests. It is important for employees to understand these conditions to ensure their safety and well-being while performing their job duties.

- Ability to lift (50 pounds or more), carry, climb, and perform a variety of other movements.
