Bridge Inspection Team Leader

Clark Nexsen is seeking a motivated and experienced Bridge Inspection Team Leader to join our growing bridge safety inspection practice. This role involves leading bridge inspection teams, performing in-depth structural condition assessments, and preparing thorough inspection reports compliant with the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS). The ideal candidate will have a strong background in bridge inspection, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to safety and quality.
The role offers opportunities for candidates ranging from EITs with inspection experience to licensed PEs with senior-level expertise. Candidates without a PE license but with substantial inspection experience are encouraged to apply and will be considered.
General responsibilities include but are not limited to the following
• Serve as a Bridge Inspection Team Leader for NBIS-compliant bridge safety inspections, including bridges, culverts, tunnels, and ancillary highway structures
• Plan and coordinate inspection projects, including access equipment and traffic control management
• Lead field inspections, acting as the primary liaison with clients and agency representatives
• Prepare and review detailed bridge safety inspection reports, ensuring accuracy and adherence to federal, state, and local guidelines
• Supervise, mentor, and provide technical guidance to junior inspectors, EITs, PEs, and CADD technicians
• Coordinate with subconsultants, vendors, and agency personnel for smooth project execution
• Assist in scope development, fee proposals, and client meetings to define project requirements
• Support quality assurance and quality control processes to maintain high standards of work
• Participate in business development and marketing activities as directed
• Maintain knowledge of NBIS, AASHTO guidelines, and relevant software tools
• Travel to project sites (approximately 50% of time), including working outdoors in varying weather and terrain conditions
• Ensure compliance with safety protocols including working at heights, over water, and in confined spaces

• Active participation in NSPE, ASCE, or other related professional organizations is desirable
• Ability to effectively utilize current company software programs for word processing, e-mail, accounting, and information management
• Ability to prepare effective and concise documents and correspondence
• Ability to make presentations to a variety of groups
• Have a client-oriented attitude with a desire to provide outstanding professional services
• Be dedicated to his or her professional development as well as the success of colleagues and the firm as a whole
• Be dedicated to the advancement of the engineering profession
• Travel an average of 50% of the time
• Work may involve times outside normal working hours (nighttime) and on weekends
• Work outdoors with varying terrain and all types of weather
• Stand, walk, and climb for 8+ hours a day
• Be able to lift 50-60 lbs and operate bridge safety inspection equipment
• Be able to work at heights, over water, and in confined spaces
• Possess a valid driver’s license
• Be able to pass a VDOT background check
Required Experience
Education, Technology, and Experience
• Engineer-in-Training (EIT): 2+ years of inspection experience OR
• Non-degree candidates: 5+ years of bridge inspection experience OR
• Professional Engineer (PE): 6 months to 10+ years of bridge inspection experience
• Bachelor’s Degree from an ABET-accredited college or university in one of the following
disciplines: o Civil Engineering (structural emphasis)
o Civil and Environmental Engineering (structural emphasis)
o Civil Engineering Technology (structural emphasis)
• Fully licensed Professional Engineer or Structural Engineer in at least one US state, preferably in the local jurisdiction
• Successful completion of NHI Course #130055 Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges or NHI Course #130056 Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges for Professional Engineers
• Successful completion of NHI Course #130053 Bridge Inspection Refresher Training as per NBIS requirements
• Successful completion of NHI Course #130078 Bridge Inspection Techniques for Nonredundant Steel Tension Members (NSTM), and NHI Course #130087 Inspection and Maintenance of Ancillary Highway Structures is desirable
• Knowledge and familiarity of the National Bridge Inspection Standards, AASHTO Manual for Bridge Evaluation, AASHTO Manual for Bridge Element Inspection, and the Bridge Inspector’s Reference Manual
• Working familiarity with analysis, design, and production software including but not limited to Microsoft Word/Excel/PowerPoint, Bluebeam Revu, and additional web-based software for data entry, AASHTOWareBrR, and MicroStation, to a point of being able to understand the capabilities and limitations of the programs and interact with the support staff in their use of the software
• Mobile Elevated Work Platform (MEWP) training Types 1, 2, and 3 is desirable
• Prior experience on VDOT and/or Federal bridge inspection projects is desirable
Working Conditions

The selected candidate is expected to work in a JMT office location at least three days per week or as needed to perform assigned duties. While most of our work is desk-based, there may be times when standing, walking, bending and lifting of minimal weight are required.
