    Job Description

    Surfline Wavetrak provides the most accurate surf forecast for surfers around the world. We're looking for a DATA ENGINEER to join a small team of engineers working on the heart of that surf forecast. Being part of a small team means you'll have significant ownership and impact on the codebase and architecture of this system. This system is critical to Surfline Wavetrak's suite of products powering surf and weather forecasts across all our products, as well as creating the data to power the next generation of our products. The system processes large amounts of weather data from a variety of sources. You'll work hand-in-hand with our data science team to deploy new algorithms and ML models transforming the data into actionable insights that help surfers score the best surf. As a DATA ENGINEER, you'll have a strong understanding of core engineering principles and production experience with software engineering techniques like automated testing, source control, deployment pipelines and infrastructure. This role will have a significant impact on the future of Surfline's suite of products through the data made available in concert with the Data Science team at Surfline. We're looking for someone who's passionate about delivering the profound by partnering closely with data science to deliver game changing insights, solving complex technical problems along the way and enabling the product engineering teams to deliver these insights to a rabid audience.

    WHAT YOU'LL DO:

    • Design, implement, and support a platform providing access to large datasets.
    • Write efficient, clean, readable, fast, testable, documented, monitored code and systems.
    • Interface with other technology teams and data science to extract, transform, and load data from a wide variety of weather data sources.
    • Operationalize machine learning models, deliver predictions and insights in various APIs for product-facing teams.
    • Build robust and scalable data pipelines.
    • Build and deliver high quality datasets to support our product teams building game-changing products.
    • Work closely with other engineers in a small, informal team environment.
    • Ship code often in a fast paced agile environment with continuous deployment.

    WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR:

    • Industry experience in software development, data engineering, or related field with a track record of manipulating, processing, and extracting value from large datasets.
    • Experience building/operating highly available, distributed systems of data extraction, ingestion, and processing of large data sets.
    • Experience experience with Python.
    • Production experience with Node.
    • Strong problem solving skills and ability to learn/adapt to new technologies.
    • Top notch communication skills.
    • A BS/MS in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or a related technical discipline.

    YOU MAY ALSO HAVE:

    • Experience with a variety of data stores like PostgreSQL and MongoDB.
    • Experience with AWS services like ECS, Lambda, Sagemaker, Batch, S3, etc.
    • Experience working with technologies like Airflow, Docker and Terraform.
    • Experience working with weather datasets. 
    • Experience operationalizing machine learning models.
    • Experience with large-scale data visualization.
