Under the general supervision, the Surgical Tech First Assist performs the scrub role and maintains a safe sterile environment which includes preparing, passing, holding, inserting, removing, cleaning and assembly of instruments, equipment and supplies; counting sponges, needles, sharps and instruments; and assists the RN with delegated circulating duties, transporting, positioning, skin preps and specimen preparation in accordance with established hospital policies and procedures. In addition, the CSFA assist the surgeon with patient-related care activities in the operating room . Always works as a team member within the entire facility. Performs other duties as assigned.
Essential Functions:
- Is responsible for performing the scrub role and assist with all aspects of the care of the surgical patient according to policy and procedure and care standards.
- Ability to take direction from others and follow through in a concise manner, which also promotes efficiency.
- Functions as first assistant during surgical incision, excision, and repair of pathology; and throughout the perioperative period
- Supports the patient’s right to ethical, legal, and competent patient care, and acts to protect and advance patient’s best interest
- Ability to communicate using written, verbal, non-verbal skills when interacting with staff, physicians and ancillary departments.
- Ability to set priorities.

- Maintains knowledge of equipment, expected patient outcome, and anticipated complications.
- Satisfactorily demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties outlined in this job description as well as continually demonstrates competency in performing the job duties.
Qualifications:
- High School graduate or equivalent required.
- Graduate of a School of Surgical Technology.
- Evidence of completion of accredited Surgical Assistant program.
- Must be Certified as an Surgical First Assist thru an accredited organization
- Effectively communicates, both orally and written.
- AHA BLS healthcare required within 30 days of hire, if not currently certified.
