POSITION: 

The Surgical Assistant (SA) is responsible for the provision of patient care to meet identified patient outcomes, and to achieve the goals of the facility as directed by the DON/Clinical Lead/Registered Nurse. The SA serves as an assistant to the surgeon during surgical procedures and carries out instructions, as trained.  Assists surgeon in performing safe operations with optimum results for patients. The SA performs duties according to scope of practice designated by the facility position description, role and responsibilities and according to the surgical assistant professional organization and certification board.

SUPERVISION:         Surgical Assistants work closely under Director of Nursing (DON)/Clinical Leader

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSURE:        

• High School Graduate or Equivalent. 
• Graduate of a recognized and accredited Surgical Assistant (SA) Program.  
• Surgical assistant or technologist certification with the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTA) or National Surgical Assistant Association (NSAA).  
• Prior experience as a Surgical Technologist preferred.  
• Current successful completion and current certification documentation of Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider Level prior to employment required.
