    Overview

A well-established, multi-disciplinary engineering and surveying firm is seeking an experienced North Carolina Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) to lead and grow its Transportation Survey Group in Concord, NC.

This is a true leadership role ideal for a senior survey professional who enjoys managing people and projects, driving business development with NCDOT and municipalities, and setting technical standards for transportation surveying across a growing region.

You’ll oversee both field and office operations, serve as a trusted survey partner to DOT stakeholders, and play a key role in expanding transportation-related survey services throughout North Carolina.

    Key Responsibilities

    Leadership & Operations

    • Lead and manage survey field and office teams, providing mentorship, technical guidance, and performance oversight
    • Oversee all aspects of transportation survey operations, ensuring compliance with NCDOT standards, safety requirements, and QA/QC protocols
    • Establish and enforce quality control procedures in accordance with the NCDOT Survey Manual

    Project & Technical Oversight

    • Manage survey projects for roadways, highways, streets, ROW, and multimodal transportation systems
    • Review and approve survey deliverables including plats, ROW plans, reports, and mapping products
    • Provide technical direction on survey computations, methods, and deliverables using industry-standard software and workflows

    Client Relations & Business Development

    • Build and maintain strong working relationships with NCDOT decision-makers and local municipalities
    • Support business development efforts, including proposal preparation, qualifications packages, and positioning for DOT contracts
    • Serve as a lead survey consultant on transportation projects throughout the region

    Financial & Resource Management

    • Assist with workforce planning, scheduling, and resource allocation
    • Support monthly billing, project financials, and final review of completed work
    • Collaborate with other managers to align survey operations with broader transportation initiatives

    Required Qualifications

    • Active North Carolina Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license (required)
    • Progressive leadership experience managing transportation survey teams and projects
    • Extensive experience supporting NCDOT transportation survey projects
    • Strong working knowledge of NCDOT survey standards, certifications, and contract requirements
    • Proven experience working with NCDOT and municipal clients in a lead or management role

    Technical Skills

    • Proficiency with transportation survey and mapping workflows using:
    • MicroStation / OpenRoads Designer (ORD)
    • Trimble Business Center (TBC)
    • FBK
    • AutoCAD Civil 3D
    • ArcGIS
    • Field experience with Trimble survey equipment
    • Strong understanding of survey computations, boundary principles, and DOT-specific methodologies

    Leadership & Professional Skills

    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to lead teams and interface with clients and public agencies
    • Proven ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment
    • Solid understanding of risk management and loss prevention
    • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and self-motivated leadership style

    Additional Requirements

    • Valid driver’s license with acceptable MVR
    • Ability to pass drug screening and background check

    Why This Opportunity Stands Out

    • Leadership role with direct influence over transportation survey growth in North Carolina
    • Strong emphasis on NCDOT work and long-term client relationships
    • Backed by a stable, multi-discipline firm with regional and national recognition
    • Competitive compensation and excellent benefits package, including:
    • Annual performance reviews and discretionary bonuses
    • 401(k) with generous employer match
    • Robust health, dental, and vision options
    • PTO, paid holidays, and flexible benefits
    • Education reimbursement and referral bonuses

This role is best suited for a senior PLS who enjoys leading people, owning client relationships, and shaping the future of a transportation survey practice, not just managing projects.
