Overview
A well-established, multi-disciplinary engineering and surveying firm is seeking an experienced North Carolina Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) to lead and grow its Transportation Survey Group in Concord, NC.
This is a true leadership role ideal for a senior survey professional who enjoys managing people and projects, driving business development with NCDOT and municipalities, and setting technical standards for transportation surveying across a growing region.
You’ll oversee both field and office operations, serve as a trusted survey partner to DOT stakeholders, and play a key role in expanding transportation-related survey services throughout North Carolina.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Operations
- Lead and manage survey field and office teams, providing mentorship, technical guidance, and performance oversight
- Oversee all aspects of transportation survey operations, ensuring compliance with NCDOT standards, safety requirements, and QA/QC protocols
- Establish and enforce quality control procedures in accordance with the NCDOT Survey Manual
Project & Technical Oversight
- Manage survey projects for roadways, highways, streets, ROW, and multimodal transportation systems
- Review and approve survey deliverables including plats, ROW plans, reports, and mapping products
- Provide technical direction on survey computations, methods, and deliverables using industry-standard software and workflows
Client Relations & Business Development
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with NCDOT decision-makers and local municipalities
- Support business development efforts, including proposal preparation, qualifications packages, and positioning for DOT contracts
- Serve as a lead survey consultant on transportation projects throughout the region
Financial & Resource Management
- Assist with workforce planning, scheduling, and resource allocation
- Support monthly billing, project financials, and final review of completed work
- Collaborate with other managers to align survey operations with broader transportation initiatives
Required Qualifications
- Active North Carolina Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license (required)
- Progressive leadership experience managing transportation survey teams and projects
- Extensive experience supporting NCDOT transportation survey projects
- Strong working knowledge of NCDOT survey standards, certifications, and contract requirements
- Proven experience working with NCDOT and municipal clients in a lead or management role
Technical Skills
- Proficiency with transportation survey and mapping workflows using:
- MicroStation / OpenRoads Designer (ORD)
- Trimble Business Center (TBC)
- FBK
- AutoCAD Civil 3D
- ArcGIS
- Field experience with Trimble survey equipment
- Strong understanding of survey computations, boundary principles, and DOT-specific methodologies
Leadership & Professional Skills
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to lead teams and interface with clients and public agencies
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Solid understanding of risk management and loss prevention
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and self-motivated leadership style
Additional Requirements
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable MVR
- Ability to pass drug screening and background check
