    Framatome is seeking a Materials Engineer for our Old Forest Road office in Lynchburg, VA.  The qualified candidate will be involved in Nuclear Fuel materials support for design engineering and fuel manufacturing.

     

    PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

    Participate in global R&D programs for new material development

    Plan and implement R&D program for novel fuel designs and materials

    Engineering lead for licensing activities of new materials

    Develop materials specifications for nuclear fuel components

    Provide materials expertise for development programs and for direct manufacturing support.

    Interface with utilities, EPRI, and other entities (internal and external) regarding material testing and development programs.

    Evaluate post-irradiation data with respect to material performance

    Assist in the preparation of material models for code development activities.

    Support reload analysis work by preparing and reviewing engineering documents.

    Interface with other Framatome and customer contacts to carry out responsibilities.

    Other similar activities as assigned by management.

    The Lynchburg Materials & Thermal Mechanics organization is responsible for a broad range of activities covering:

    • PWR fuel rod design
    • PWR control component design
    • Nuclear fuel materials development
    • Fuel manufacturing support
    • Fuel rod performance code development.

    The engineering activities are coordinated with other Framatome fuel engineering departments both locally and worldwide.

    Materials engineers within the department offer direct support to resolve manufacturing problems as well as work on teams which improve manufacturing processes and/or material performance. Related activities include maintenance and revision of material product specifications and qualification reports.

    Material & Fuel Performance data is routinely gathered from post-irradiation measurements. This data must be reduced and evaluated against existing databases. Periodically the updated databases need to be incorporated in revised material models within the fuel rod codes and methods.

    Materials engineers support research efforts aimed at improving current materials as well as developing new alloys. They provide the materials expertise in support of licensing new materials and applications.

     

    ALL CANDIDATES MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY.  CANDIDATES WHO EXCEED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS MAY BE CONSIDERED FOR A HIGHER LEVEL POSITION.

    • ENGINEER II:  BS in Materials Science & Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or related equivalent plus 2-3 years experience.
    • ENGINEER III:  BS in Materials Science & Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or related equivalent plus 3-5 years experience.
    • An advanced degree may be substituted for related experience (MS 1-2 yrs or PhD 1-3 yrs).
    • Positive and effective team interaction skills, along with positive peer relationship skills.
    • Leadership and initiative in meeting customer requirements.
    • Excellent communication skills (oral/presentation/written), and the ability to effectively communicate and coordinate activities among the diverse groups within Framatome and with customers.

     

    THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS ARE DESIRED AND WILL BE USED TO DIFFERENTIATE ALL CANDIDATES WHO APPLY FOR THIS POSITION.

    • Metallurgical engineering experience in the nuclear industry and familiarity with required engineering quality and controls in this industry.
    • Materials experience and expertise with stainless steels, nickel-based alloys, zirconium alloys, and UO2 ceramics.
    • French and/or German language skills
    • Experience as principle investigator on U.S. Government funding research program
    • Experience in scientific/technical code development and programming, and in technical document preparation and review
