    EDITORIAL INTERN

THE CITY is seeking candidates for a full-time, paid internship for the spring of 2023 focusing on service and explanatory journalism.

    THE ORGANIZATION

Launched in 2019, THE CITY is New York City's preeminent nonprofit, nonpartisan local news organization. Working across all five boroughs, our award-winning journalists bring diverse skills and backgrounds to the task of covering New York's neighborhoods, holding the powerful to account and making sense of the greatest city in the world.

Journalism by THE CITY uncovered the scheme that led to the indictment and resignation of New York's lieutenant governor, helped secure repairs in public housing, prompted solitary confinement reforms following the preventable death of a transgender woman on Rikers Island, and led to legislation addressing grueling working conditions of New York's delivery workers.

News applications and service journalism by THE CITY helped New Yorkers understand redistricting, join a community board, get help to pay skyrocketing utility bills, see how their neighborhood voted, track COVID numbers, and more.

THE CITY is in a growth phase that will add reporters and editors to our newsroom, strengthen our business capabilities and build our revenue-generating capacities.

    THE POSITION

This is not a get-coffee-and-shuffle-paperwork internship. We are looking for student journalists at the undergraduate and graduate levels who will arrive with some reporting chops. You will hone and add skills to your repertoire by working in a top-notch local newsroom.

You will work directly with an editor on service and explanatory reporting to help and inform New Yorkers — guides on complicated topics, explainers on the news of the day, and articles that directly answer questions from our curious readers.

You should walk in with ideas ready to go on your first day and an understanding of how to generate and pursue story leads in this great city. We'd like to hear your thoughts on which communities or topic areas are best suited for service journalism from THE CITY.

In addition to working on your own pieces, you will also help field reader questions, and feedback, and help our staffers report their stories — always with due credit.

Duties include pitching and fielding stories, reporting and writing, taking photographs at times and prepping social media language and posts for your articles.

We're looking for someone who can commit to a full work week for 12 weeks, and lives within the five boroughs or immediate suburbs for the duration of the internship.

The ideal candidate is a motivated, energetic student of journalism who can work well with others and is passionate about the power and importance of local news.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Strong writing and verbal communication skills
    • A nose for news
    • A willingness to listen and learn — and to share what you know

    OTHER THINGS TO KNOW...

    Salary: $800/week

    Location: New York City (obviously)

Job descriptions like this one are wish lists that are rarely completely fulfilled, even by the successful candidate. Don't hesitate to apply even if you don't check every box. You can be right for the job even if you're missing a bullet point or two, and you can have important skills we haven't thought of that would make you a compelling candidate. Even if this doesn't end up being a match, applying puts you on our radar – and it's free!

We are dedicated to improving our newsroom, in part by better reflecting the people of the city we cover. We are committed to diversity and building an inclusive environment for people of all backgrounds and ages, and we especially encourage members of traditionally under-represented communities to apply, including women, people of color, LGBTQ people, immigrants, veterans, people with disabilities, and those with lived experiences in the communities we cover.
