    MAJOR GIFTS OFFICER

    THE CITY is seeking a front-line fundraiser to join its fundraising and communications team as a full-time Major Gifts Officer.

    THE ORGANIZATION

    Launched in 2019, THE CITY is New York City's preeminent nonprofit, nonpartisan, local news organization. Working across all five boroughs, our award-winning journalists bring deeply diverse skills and backgrounds to the task of covering New York's neighborhoods, holding the powerful to account, and making sense of the greatest city in the world.

    In the past two years, journalism by THE CITYexposed inequities in vaccine access, helpedsecure repairs in public housing, and shone a spotlight on New York'sdelivery workers. THE CITY collaborated with readers to share stories of loved ones lost to COVID, leading to ourMissing Them project, widely noted for its innovation. And ourMeet Your Mayor interactive guide helped hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers make sense of a wild election.

    THE CITY is currently in a growth phase that will add reporting and editing firepower to our newsroom, strengthen our business capabilities, and build our fundraising and revenue generating capacities.

    THE POSITION

    The Major Gift Officer will engage in and be responsible for all aspects of the donor development cycle including donor identification, cultivation, solicitation, acknowledgment, partnership and stewardship. Reporting directly to the Director of Development, she/he/they will craft fundraising and stewardship strategies and build and maintain relationships with donors and prospects who are capable of making annual major donors gifts.

    AS THE MAJOR GIFTS OFFICER YOU WILL…

    • Build and manage a portfolio of major gift donors and prospect.
    • Cultivate existing major donors and encourage renewal, retention and increased donor support.
    • Conceptualize and implement strategies to engage new prospects.
    • Track the status of multi-year pledges and send pledge reminders to donors; Oversee the tracking of moves management for major gift donors and prospects, including leading regular moves management meetings.
    • Develop and achieve monthly fundraising and cultivation goals for prospect and donor visits; prepare visit reports and follow-up correspondence; Prepare regular reports on all individual campaign activities for the special and major gift portfolios.
    • Coordinate and collaborate with THE CITY colleagues, including leadership team, Board of Directors, and development team members to develop targeted and personalized solicitation and stewardship.
    • Communicate persuasively through personal visits (in-person and virtual), written proposals, appeal letters, and reports.
    • Customize donor acknowledgement for special and major gifts, appreciation, and recognition consistent with gift level.
    • Work with the Membership Manager on individual appeal campaigns, online and digital giving initiatives and digital donor engagement including social media.
    • Develop and oversee the planning and execution of major donor cultivation events; Assist with the planning and production of fundraising and membership events.
    • Work with Communications team to develop innovative major donor fundraising and marketing strategies
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • 4+ years of relevant work experience in a donor-facing role in Development.
    • Experience managing an active portfolio of individual and/or planned giving donors.
    • Proven track record of securing major donor gifts.
    • Experience managing budgets and meeting revenue goals.
    • Experience working with board members and senior leadership.
    • Active knowledge of NY philanthropic and cultural communities.
    • Proficient experience with fundraising databases.
    • Self-starter with ability to get up to speed quickly and work independently in a hybrid work environment.
    • Highly motivated, organized, flexible, and proactive.
    • Strong time and project management skills.
    • Excellent communication skills—both oral and written.
    • Must be able to work occasional special events (including evenings) as needed, and additional hours during peak times as required
    • Discretion with sensitive, confidential, and proprietary information.

    Salary Range: $115,000 - $125,000

    Benefits: Generous paid time off: 20 vacation days, 8 paid holidays, 2 floating paid holidays, and 8 paid sick days.
