    Job Description

    The position is a broad-based coastal science position. Applicants should have a comprehensive understanding of coastal processes (geological, ecological, biological, chemical and physical) with an emphasis on beach, dune, coastal bank and estuarine systems. Specialization in coastal and estuarine sedimentology is preferred. Applicants should be able to work with and collect various types of coastal and environmental data, including time series, and have experience with the use of bathymetric and topographic data, historical maps, and aerial photography. Applicants should be proficient with geospatial analyses using ArcGIS software. Clear writing and data presentation skills are required, as the applicant will be responsible for preparing concise, clear, and high quality data figures and summaries, as well as written reports of completed work.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Coastal Scientist will have the following duties and responsibilities:

    • Candidate will be expected to employ a systems based scientific approach to understanding and interpreting coastal processes
    • Collection, processing, and reporting of sediment samples, specifically sediment cores with responsibility for sediment characterization of core samples
    • Assist with hydrographic and geophysical surveys, data collection and processing
    • Assist with coastal, estuarine, oceanographic, and meteorological observational programs; including preparation and mobilization of equipment, collection of field observations, and analysis of time-series.
    • Assist with the preparation of permits and regulatory documents
    • Perform literature reviews and background research for new project areas
    • Perform shoreline change analysis, map production, and other geospatial analyses using ArcGIS software.
    • Reports status of project tasks to supervisor
    • Demonstrate teamwork, compatibility, and professionalism with other staff members, customers and contractor personnel at worksites
    • Prepares and makes public presentations, as required
    • Incorporate field and laboratory data into well written and clearly presented figures and reports
    • Prepare written reports including discussions of technical methods, analyze results, and process descriptions
    • Assure proper archiving and documentation of data
    • Perform domestic and international field missions to conduct measurement programs
    • Complete projects within budget and schedule restraints
    • Participate in new proposal efforts.
    • Candidate will be expected to develop skills and advance in capabilities.

    QUALIFICATIONS: The preferred applicant is a coastal scientist with an applied technical background in coastal geology, coastal zone management, marine science or oceanography. A Bachelor's degree in coastal geology, coastal zone management, marine science or similar field, with 3-5 years’ related experience is required. A Master’s degree is preferred, and can substitute for the related work experience.

    Demonstrated capabilities in data analysis and courses in quantitative coastal processes, and knowledge of sediment and water biogeochemistry are desirable. A high level of proficiency in personal computers, including Microsoft Office, and a familiarity with field sampling equipment and protocols is required. Excellent written, communication, and interpersonal skills are required. Successful candidates should be team players and self-motivated, exhibit leadership potential, strong people and communication skills, and have a commitment to producing high- quality work and a desire to take on challenges.
