Job Description
The position is a broad-based coastal science position. Applicants should have a comprehensive understanding of coastal processes (geological, ecological, biological, chemical and physical) with an emphasis on beach, dune, coastal bank and estuarine systems. Specialization in coastal and estuarine sedimentology is preferred. Applicants should be able to work with and collect various types of coastal and environmental data, including time series, and have experience with the use of bathymetric and topographic data, historical maps, and aerial photography. Applicants should be proficient with geospatial analyses using ArcGIS software. Clear writing and data presentation skills are required, as the applicant will be responsible for preparing concise, clear, and high quality data figures and summaries, as well as written reports of completed work.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Coastal Scientist will have the following duties and responsibilities:
QUALIFICATIONS: The preferred applicant is a coastal scientist with an applied technical background in coastal geology, coastal zone management, marine science or oceanography. A Bachelor's degree in coastal geology, coastal zone management, marine science or similar field, with 3-5 years’ related experience is required. A Master’s degree is preferred, and can substitute for the related work experience.
Demonstrated capabilities in data analysis and courses in quantitative coastal processes, and knowledge of sediment and water biogeochemistry are desirable. A high level of proficiency in personal computers, including Microsoft Office, and a familiarity with field sampling equipment and protocols is required. Excellent written, communication, and interpersonal skills are required. Successful candidates should be team players and self-motivated, exhibit leadership potential, strong people and communication skills, and have a commitment to producing high- quality work and a desire to take on challenges.
