    _SBP is a preeminent, independent biomedical research institute dedicated to understanding human biology and disease, and advancing scientific discoveries to profoundly impact human health. _ 

    The Wechsler-Reya lab is looking for a qualified and enthusiastic LABORATORY COORDINATOR to join the team.  The lab studies normal brain development and brain tumor formation. Using transgenic and transplantation-based models, the lab investigates the fate of normal stem cells, the ability these cells to give rise to tumors, and the mechanisms that allow tumor progression and metastasis. The long-term goal is to develop more effective approaches to therapy of medulloblastoma and other childhood brain tumors.

    The Lab Coordinator will assist with management of the lab including ordering, maintaining budgets, writing protocols, ensuring compliance with animal and safety regulations, and supervising undergraduate research assistants.  He/she will also work directly with graduate students and postdoctoral researchers in support of ongoing research projects. Qualified individuals will also have the opportunity to carry out an independent research project.

    Primary Responsibilities

    • Provides guidance to lab staff to execute projects within allotted budget and timelines
    • Ensures lab procedures comply with high quality standards
    • Develops research reports, presents to management for review and recommends improvements to lab procedures
    • Develops and maintains lab procedures, experimental protocols and work instructions
    • Anticipates needs of the lab and prepares accordingly (orders supplies, maintains inventory, considers budget implications and coordinates equipment use with other labs)
    • Troubleshoots problems and recommends solutions to technical problems of complex scope
    • Participates in research projects, including providing interpretations and analysis of results
    • Prepares and delivers professional scientific presentations
    • Trains subordinate lab personnel in the correct use and application of lab equipment and procedures
    • Maintains laboratory equipment in compliance with regulations and operational needs
    • Ensures lab employees follow industry standards, safety regulations, and Institute lab policies and practices
    • Plans and schedules work activities to ensure adequate space, use of equipment, and coordination with other project activities within the lab
    • Oversees personnel and conducts daily tasks of a full-time technician in proper laboratory procedures and safety

    Required Skills Required Experience

    • Bachelor’s degree in a biological science, chemistry, physics or a related field and 3 years’ experience OR equivalent education, training and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been attained.
    • For candidates with a masters degree, at least 1 year of experience is preferred
    • Supervisory experience preferred
    • Previous experience in neuroscience, developmental biology and/or cancer biology would be helpful
    • Experience working with research mice, especially surgery, is highly desired.
