Shenandoah Conservatory, one of the country’s leading centers for collaborative and innovative work across the performing arts, is seeking nominations and applications for an exceptional percussionist performer, teacher, recruiter, and entrepreneurial musician to join the Instrumental faculty. This full-time and career-contract track position begins August 2021.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The chosen candidate will be skilled across music styles, passionate about preparing students for work in the 21st century, and will further strengthen Shenandoah Conservatory's reputation as an inclusive and premier place of study where artists from diverse backgrounds actively engage around innovative and collaborative work.

Specifically, the desired candidate will:

• Provide mentorship to both undergraduate and graduate percussion students (both performance and non-performance majors), teaching applied lessons, coaching percussion ensemble, and ensuring percussion students become well-rounded and marketable;
• Build the percussion studio, successfully recruiting highly talented students, and strategically employ media and 21st century tools to effectively build listeners/followers;
• Actively collaborate with faculty across the Conservatory;
• Teach courses or seminars in the field of expertise as appropriate (such as The 21st Century Musician);
• Oversee a jazz percussion adjunct and help plan percussion masterclasses throughout the academic year;
• Actively contribute to curriculum discussions and a faculty community that is oriented towards excellence, collaboration, and innovation, including forward-oriented approaches to career preparation of music performance students;
• Maintain a high-profile performance career while being intensely engaged in Conservatory and University life, including contributing to school-wide conversations and committees, and participating in division meetings, auditions, and recruitment activities; and
• Actively contribute to the Conservatory’s commitment to Inclusion, Diversity and Equity.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Required and minimum qualifications include the following:

• An excellent percussionist with a national/international profile and extensive performing experience across music styles;
• An excellent teacher with proven success as a studio teacher;
• Ability and interest to effectively attract and recruit students;
• Demonstrated ability to employ media (whether social media, YouTube, and/or streaming services) to effectively build listeners/followers;
• Demonstrated orientation towards collaborative work; 
• Possession of a DMA or equivalent professional experience; 
• Eligibility to work in the United States; and
• An ability to contribute to the Conservatory’s commitment to inclusion, diversity and equity.
