    The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decision makers concerned with global security and prosperity. Over the years, it has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind, with a staff of some 200 employees, including more than 120 analysts working to address the changing dynamics of international security across the globe.

     

    JOB SUMMARY:

     

    The CSIS Americas Program seeks highly motivated candidates for a full-time, paid, internship in a dynamic and fast-paced environment for Spring 2019 starting on or around JANUARY 13, 2019.

     

    The Americas Program, directed by Michael Matera, produces independent, policy relevant analysis on a broad range of Western Hemisphere issues including governance, rule of law, and trade in the region with a special focus on Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Venezuela, and the Caribbean. In crafting policy recommendations, the program uses working groups and roundtable discussions to integrate perspectives from a range of stakeholders—the human rights community, the corporate sector, implementing organizations and agencies, congressional staff, administration officials, academics, activists, and Latin American opinion leaders. The results are recommendations that are centrist, forward-looking, and pragmatic.

     

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following:

     

    The research intern’s responsibilities will include: • Assisting with ongoing Americas Program research and short-term projects as specified by the staff and the Program Director; • Assisting in the preparation and execution of Americas Program events, ranging from small group meetings to multi-day conferences; • Disseminating news to our web following; • Attending topical events in D.C.; • Other administrative tasks as needed.

    KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:

     

    STRONG CANDIDATES WILL BE ABLE TO COMMIT TO A FULL-TIME INTERNSHIP (35 HOURS/WEEK) FOR A MINIMUM OF 3 MONTHS AND A MAXIMUM OF 6 MONTHS, AND POSSESS THE FOLLOWING ATTRIBUTES:

     

    • Strong academic record with a demonstrated interest in Western Hemisphere affairs. Competitive applicants will have or be completing a B.A. in international relations, economics, political science, history, or Latin American studies; • Must have at least a 3.5 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) from an accredited U.S. institution or equivalent from a non-U.S. institution; • Demonstrated knowledge of Latin America; • Excellent analytical and writing abilities; • Ability to work independently; • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; • Detail-oriented, well-organized, and the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously; • Fluency in Spanish required; proficiency in Portuguese is a plus.
