  • Responsibilities

    Reporting to the CEO, the Controller is responsible for overseeing all fiscal and fiduciary responsibilities for the Company in conjunction with the CEO, Board, and audit partners. The Controller plays a key role as the first finance manager, and will oversee all accounting, reporting, audit and compliance matters. The business is a rapidly expanding home services business, so the Controller have demonstrated competence as a controller, with expertise in accounting, planning, and compliance; a CPA is strongly preferred.

    The Controller will oversee the financial management and reporting, ensuring that the Company has the flexibility, resources, and systems needed to grow and scale. The Controller must establish strong relationships with all divisions/affiliates and functions, and work closely with a new PE sponsor.

    The Controller will serve as an important third member of the executive team, providing financial leadership as the business continues to grow organically and through acquisitions, expanding from the current 5 state locations. This role is an excellent opportunity for a Controller looking to grow professionally into a broader scope of responsibilities.

    Primary day-to-day responsibilities for the Controller will include direct accountability for implementing, managing, and controlling all financial-related activities of the Company. S/he will provide manage the company's accounting, treasury, tax and FP&A needs, with key input to strategic planning, capital allocation, M&A analysis, and risk management.

    Responsibilities of this position includes:

    • Build a cost-efficient and scalable infrastructure to support the Company's expanding needs for centralized shared services. Initial priorities include standing-up compliant and standard financial controls, systems and processes, hiring talent, and implementing reporting and business analytics.

    • Provide timely and accurate analysis of budgets, KPIs, financial trends, and forecasts, while maintaining effective internal controls. Manage finance operations, close process, and complete monthly performance reporting package.

    • Maintain effective treasury operations including cash management, cash flow forecasting, risk management, and banking arrangements; partner with new sponsor to ensure that effective capital and debt structures are in place to support the Company's business plans.

    • Lead financial drivers and transactional deliverables in support of growth through greenfield investments and M&A. Must demonstrate analytical and project management skills, ability to lead investment choices and transactional execution, have familiarity with multiple finance structures, and be able to integrate acquisition finance/infrastructure.

    • Provide recommendations to strategically enhance financial performance and business opportunities; advise executive management and the Board of Directors on the financial implications of business activities, ensuring that the Company is always positioned to act, rather than react, in the best interests of its customers, employees, and shareholders.

    • Select and implement a financial ERP system, leveraging integrated processes and best practices across all divisions for efficient and cost-effective operations and decision support. Additionally, this infrastructure must provide for scalable growth and the smooth integration of additional acquisitions.

    • Build a strong - but small - financial team and lead as a player-coach with inspirational leadership in hiring, training, and developing of subordinates.

    The ideal Controller will have experience as a financial team leader, preferably in construction or infrastructure maintenance services and private equity-backed organizations. This person must have demonstrated the ability to scale a business organically and through M&A, and to drive operational excellence cross-functionally.

    The Controller must have a work style and pace that makes things happen, with a strong work ethic, low ego, and a bias for initiating positive change through collaboration. Strong administrative, management, planning, and organizational skills are essential. The right person will have a passion for detail, curiosity about every financial and commercial aspect of the business, and a drive to meet commitments and deadlines at all times.

    Measurable accomplishments in team building, mergers & acquisitions, budgeting, accounting controls, treasury functions, strategic planning, and risk management are required. IT systems experience and knowledge of multistate tax matters are important.

    A background with branch office operations or independent P&L divisions is a plus. Raising transparency of each P&L, leveraging centralized shared services, and establishing efficient consolidation processes are all essential to smooth operations, continued growth, and profitability.

    Requirements

    The successful candidate will be a highly intelligent and capable financial manager with experience in public accounting, transaction services, or large, best in class finance organizations. This individual will possess logical thinking, vision, tact, and the ability to quickly gain the confidence and respect of the Board, CEO, and other senior staff members. Prior experience within a private equity environment and construction-industry a plus.

    It is imperative that the Controller be level-headed, adaptive, personable, and an enabler of business, while still maintaining strict financial and regulatory rigor. The capacity to be a strong business partner, competent functional leader, and a strong team player are necessary qualifiers.

    Other key characteristics include maturity, sound judgment, strong instincts, high integrity, loyalty, strong communications skills, an eye for details, and the ability to motivate and challenge.

    Undergraduate degree, preferably in accounting or business administration, with the advanced credentials of a CPA and/or MBA.

    Candidate must have unrestricted US work authorization. While we have a strong preference for a candidate local to our Billings MT offices, we will consider hybrid within the region (eg. Denver/SLC) with an expectation that you will regularly meet and work onsite with the executive team.
