    Terrestris Global Solutions is seeking a Top Secret cleared Military Historian for the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) in Alexandria, VA. This position will provide timely and accurate historical support to the Secretary of Defense and the Office of the Secretary of Defense. The Military Historian will conduct research and create a variety of written and multimedia deliverables for a variety of historical products.  This role will assist with annual updates to the Historical Office's Foreign Travels of the Secretaries of Defense database; writing historical information papers and reference responses; developing historical content for the office web site; preparing for, conducting, and reviewing oral history interviews; researching, writing, and reviewing historical content for historical exhibits and displays; and assisting in managing the DoD History Speaker Series.

    WHAT DOES A MILITARY HISTORIAN AT TERRESTRIS DO?

    The Military Historian will:

    • Create information papers and conduct historical research queries, specifically:
    • o conduct research
    • o analyze the material gathered
    • o write information papers to provide useful historical or analytical insight to officials.

    WHAT DOES TERRESTRIS LOOK FOR IN A MILITARY HISTORIAN?

    You might be the Military Historian we're looking for if you:

    • Possess at least a master's degree in history, political science, international relations, or a closely related field from an accredited university.
    • Have full-time experience of at least 2 years in the history of the nation's national security policy, conflicts, and foreign affairs, or in governmental affairs. This must include extensive experience conducting research in diplomatic, defense, or military records in official national archives or private repositories in support of a graduate thesis or book.
    • Have experience writing focused research papers as part of a graduate program and have published at least one article in a professional journal or by a government history office that demonstrates an understanding of diplomatic or national security policy and/or military strategy and operations.
    • Possess experience in planning and preparing for oral history interviews and using oral history interviews in historical writing projects. Experience is evidenced by formal oral history course work at the graduate level, by conducting oral history interviews in support of a research project, or by at least one year in a position incorporating oral history as a primary duty.
    • Possess skill and experience in using the Chicago Manual of Style, 17th edition, as evidenced by completion of at least one published article and a graduate thesis.
    • Can quickly learn and apply the OSD Historical Office Style Guide.
    • Possess effective communications skills, as evidenced by making at least two presentations at professional conferences or teaching at least two college-level courses.
    • Can write with correct grammar, effective organization, and readable style.
    • Can interact with personnel at all levels and effectively coordinate with other offices, departments and institutions to acquire necessary information and provide concise and useful responses to their historical inquiries.
    • Possess an active Top Secret clearance and are able to obtain and maintain access to SCI, NATO, RD/FRD, CNWDI, and Q information.

    Research and write responses to historical queries from external stakeholders.

    Maintain and make substantive and stylistic updates to the OSD Historical Office website.

    Conduct research and write material suitable for publication on the Historical Office's web site.

    Develop biographical profiles of past DoD officials, summaries of historical events, and synopses of longer publications.

    Provide exhibit development support, by conducting historical research, including photographic research, to support the development of new historical and commemorative exhibits and to update existing exhibits in the Pentagon and elsewhere.

    Write and review captions, scripts, and other text in historical and commemorative exhibits.

    Assist in managing the DoD History Speaker Series by recommending topics and speakers, scheduling speakers and venues, arranging advertising, and coordinating events.

    Capture, process, and integrate information required to update and maintain the OSD Historical Office publication Department of Defense Key Officials and the interactive version of Department of Defense Key Officials on the OSD Historical Office website.

    Assist with annual updates to the Foreign Travels of the Secretaries of Defense database on the Historical Office website.

    Assist with preparation of oral history interviews with present and past senior Department of Defense and other national security officials.

    Provide input on which candidates to interview, conduct primary and secondary research to prepare for interviews, write interview questions. And, when needed, conduct interviews.

    Format, edit, and revise transcripts, and ensure that transcripts and audio recordings are properly accessioned into the oral history archive.
