We are seeking a FUTURES LAB TECHNICIAN to provide the U.S. Army War College with a wide range of futures-focused, hands on learning to educate students, faculty, and staff on the capabilities and limitations of a wide range of technologies, including but not limited to: artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, biotechnology, advanced communications, quantum information sciences, microelectronics, directed energy, robotics, extended reality, and other new, emerging, or evolving technologies.

    SO, WHAT WILL THE FUTURE LAB TECHNICIAN DO?

    The Lab Technician shall oversee the Futures Lab on a daily basis. Daily operations include tasks to maintain a safe, secure, clean, and well organized operations and learning environment, including: safety and security; demonstrations and education; maintenance, organization, and cleaning; and other routine tasks.

    WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE FOR THE FUTURE LAB TECHNICIAN?

    You will:

    • Keep lab organized, clean, and ensure safe operations

    • Open lab in the morning (or as required); secure lab equipment at the end of the day (or as required)

    • Un-box and set up new lab equipment

    • Written (digital) weekly report on lab activities

    • Develop signage and teaching aids as required

    • Develop safety protocols for existing and new equipment

    • Maintain, Operate, Demonstrate, and Train in the Use of Systems/Equipment in support of the Futures Lab with the equipment listed below but not limited to; (maintain itemized list)

      • Remotely piloted vehicles (RPV) and associated systems
      • 3D printing
      • Robotics
      • Brain Control Interfaces and cognitive enhancers
      • Software Systems such as Windows, Apple, Linux; computer network operations and integrating new technologies into existing networks.
      • Haptic feedback systems
      • Genetic engineering
      • LASER technology and control systems
      • New technologies (as acquired)
    • Track and conduct routine, operator-level maintenance on Lab systems. Track and advise on when equipment requires higher level maintenance. Advise on equipment replacement and obsolescence requirements.

    • Replacement of expendable supplies for lab systems and equipment. The form will list supplies required by the equipment and systems in the lab, for operations and maintenance, including but not limited to:

      • Petroleum, oil, and lubricants required by lab systems
      • Expendable 3D printer material and nozzles
      • 3D printer cleaning and maintenance supplies
      • Test slides associated with genetic engineering
      • Robot parts that are expendable or wear out, such as: maintenance supplies, gaskets, rubber boots for protecting joints, feet, battery packs and chargers, handheld controllers
      • Remotely Piloted Vehicle (RPV) parts that are expendable or wear out: maintenance supplies, replacement parts, propellers, landing gear, battery packs and chargers, handheld controllers
      • Specialized cleaning supplies for optics, electronics, and biometric systems
      • Required software patches and upgrades for lab systems
    • Develop and maintain a digital yearly schedule for planning and execution of lab systems maintenance.

     

    WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO YOU LOOK FOR?

    You might be the FUTURE LAB TECHNICIAN we're looking for if you have:

    • Associates degree in a relevant STEM field.
    • One year of Technical Help Desk or laboratory experience in any STEM field.
    • One year experience developing and conducting demonstrations, training, and education for technological systems, in formal and informal settings.
    • The candidate must be a U.S. citizen.
    • FAA CERTIFICATION:  Must have or attain within 6 months of contract start, an FAA Part 107 exemption for Remotely Piloted Vehicles (RPV) and RPV associated systems.
    • Be proficient in basic computer skills including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office applications, basic writing and editing skills, search/create folders, and computer terminology.  Contractor shall be proficient in on-line collaborative platforms such as Teams, Zoom, and other collaborative tools.

    We're extra impressed by folks with:

    • A bachelors degree in a STEM related discipline.
    • Certification in one of the systems listed under the equipment list in description above.
    • Five or more years Technical Help Desk or laboratory experience in any STEM field.
    • More than one year experience developing and conducting demonstrations, training, and education for technological systems, for field grade officers or above (civilian equivalent - middle managers).
    • One or more years working on a GO/FO staff, or civilian equivalent, in a protocol or protocol-related position.
    • Candidate with a CURRENT SECRET Clearance. To qualify, the vendor must also possess a valid Facility Clearance (FCL) of equal or greater level.
