    Income Tax Return Preparer Job Description

    Overview

    Joyful Jobs is recruiting a tax preparer on behalf of Bottom Line Tax & Accounting. This position reports to the Chief Executive Officer. It requires expertise in the preparation of income tax return forms using Ultra Tax software for individuals, businesses, and other entities.

    • Review financial records, such as prior tax return forms, income statements, and documentation of expenditures to determine forms needed to prepare returns.
    • Prepare year-end and adjust journal entries.
    • Prepare reconciliation statement of book to tax.
    • Prepare schedules and analyses that support tax return entries.
    • Interview and correspond with clients to obtain additional information on taxable income, deductible expenses and allowances, and other information required for the return.
    • Compute taxes owed and complete entries on forms, following tax form instructions and tax tables.
    • Perform tax research, consult IRS, and state tax laws, regulations, rulings, and pronouncements to determine the proper tax treatment for preparation of atypical returns.
    • Perform input verification of drafted income tax returns prepared by others to detect errors.
    • Compare prior year income, deductions, credits, payments, and taxes with current year and analyzes and records variances and their causes.
    • Organize income tax packages in accordance with office procedures to facilitate Final Review.

    Desired Credentials, Skills, and Experience

    • EA or CPA Required.
    • Minimum of three years’ experience working in a public accounting firm or tax preparation business.
    • Preferred: proficiency in QuickBooks.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
    • Detail oriented and accurate.
    • Comfortable working under pressure in a fast-paced, production environment.

    Compensation/Benefits

    • Salary range $52,000-$72,800 ($23-$35 per hour), DOE.
    • Performance bonus opportunities.
