    Job Description

    We currently have an exciting opening in our Books department for an Editorial Assistant to work in our Business, Economics and Law team. The team publishes student, academic and professional books, and the role provides the opportunity to gain a thorough introduction to the world of publishing across a range of text types. This varied and demanding role involves working on all phases of the book publication process, from the conceptual stage to the finished book and beyond. We are seeking an enthusiastic, motivated candidate with a real interest in learning new publishing and professional skills.

    THIS ROLE WILL ENCOMPASS A ' BALANCED WORKING' APPROACH, MEANING, YOU WILL WORK BETWEEN THE OFFICE* AND YOUR HOME. YOU MUST LIVE IN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE TO THE PHILADELPHIA OFFICE.

    WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING: 

    • Supporting the Commissioning Editor you report to in achieving the agreed revenue and profitability targets for their list
    • Preparing manuscripts for Production and meeting handover goals 
    • Researching and arranging peer reviews of book proposals under consideration
    • Sending author contracts 
    • Managing schedules for manuscripts under contract and negotiating delivery deadlines 
    • Monitoring schedules and delivery dates to ensure timely publication
    • Crafting descriptive copy for covers, promotional materials, and sales presentations
    • Forming and maintaining relationships with authors and colleagues
    • Maintaining databases and systems
    • Contributing to group tasks and initiatives as require
  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    • Extremely organized, with strong prioritization and time management skills 
    • Ability to work efficiently, calmly and to a high standard under pressure 
    • Meticulous attention to detail 
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to communicate sensitively and professionally
    • High standard of written English 
    • Team player with a flexible, positive approach to helping others, and an enthusiasm for learning
    • Ability to work autonomously and self-motivate 
    • Ability to take the initiative to anticipate and resolve problems 
    • Ability to understand financial and numerical data 
    • Competence with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook, and ability to learn new software
    • Willingness and enthusiasm to learn about academic publishing

     

    *The Philadelphia office still remains closed so you will initially work from home until it reopens.
