    We are looking for an experienced Materials Engineer to join our team in Monroe, MI. This position is responsible for providing technical support to the DRIV™ manufacturing and engineering facilities in the area of polymers and elastomers. This position is to interface with engineering, business units, manufacturing and quality. Activities will include developing, specifying and testing of paints, oils, and greases. This role supports product launches, cost reduction programs, manufacturing operations, and engineering center through interpretation of industry and customer standards and specifications. In addition, this position will require reviewing and directing the technical activities of junior staff members. This Materials Engineer will report directly to the Engineering Manager and will be a valued member of the manufacturing team where we strive to promote from within wherever possible; therefore, opportunities for advancement are strong.

     RESPONSIBILITIES:

     

    • Set-up tests and evaluations in the Materials Engineering Laboratory
    • Collect, summarize and communicate test data to business units, product engineering, process engineering, Quality and plant operations
    • Support development of automotive components including oil seals, bumpers, bushings, and plastic / composite structural components
    • Interpret composite, polymer, and elastomer material and test specifications
    • Perform material compatibility evaluations and recommendations
    • Coordinate material evaluations through external labs for tests including rhinometry, DSC,TGA, FTIR, spectrometry, particle size analysis.
    • Write polymer and elastomer material specifications
    • Work with vendors to specific polymers and elastomers that meet vehicle damper application requirements
    • Assist in the maintenance of Materials Engineering Laboratory’s TS16949 and ISO 14001 certification and related procedures
    • Maintain Materials Engineering Laboratory equipment and facilities
    • Support and adhere to Tenneco EH&S policies and procedures
    • Perform tasks as instructed by Materials Engineering Management
    • Other duties as assigned

    Required Skills Required Experience

    EDUCATION: Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Engineering or related field.

     

    SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

     

    • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the field of chemistry / chemical engineering
    • Self-directed and motivated with good written and verbal communication skills; ability to effectively prepare and deliver technical reports and presentations.
    • Complete understanding of polymer / elastomer theory, practice and application.
    • Excellent lab skills, techniques and aptitude for test equipment and measurement operations
    • Solid program/project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects in parallel.
    • Excellent computer proficiency especially in Microsoft Office products including – Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
