    General Summary

     

    The Engineering Director – Center for Bionic Medicine (CBM) is responsible for oversight of engineering teams that work on the development and support of devices, programs, and supporting technologies that share the goal of improving the function and quality of life for individuals with amputation and other physical disabilities.

     

    The Engineering Director – CBM seeks to identify, form, and manage engineering collaborations between CBM engineers and other research groups within Shirley Ryan AbilityLab in support of those researchers' objectives.

     

    The Engineering Director, Research – CBM will consistently demonstrate support of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab statement of Vision, Mission and Core Values by striving for excellence, contributing to the team efforts and showing respect and compassion for patients and their families, fellow employees, and all others with whom there is contact at or in the interest of the institute.

    Principal Responsibilities

     

    The Engineering Director – CBM:

     

    1. Oversees multidisciplinary engineering teams in the development and support of CBM devices, programs, and supporting technologies.
    2. Establishes, communicates, and leads high-level objectives and priorities for CBM engineering efforts based on direction of Scientific Chair, available resources, and input from engineering managers and other CBM leaders.
    3. Plans and coordinates the work of engineering staff in meeting high-level objectives.
    4. Calling upon broad expertise, provides technical leadership in solving engineering problems with causal interactions across mechanical, electronic, and software domains.
    5. Provides hands-on technical management, guidance, and support on an everyday basis.
    6. Performs engineering functions as needs arise.
    7. Ensures responsible use and upkeep of engineering shop space, equipment, and assets.
    8. Mentors CBM engineers in skill development, career growth, and professional interpersonal interactions.
    9. Establishes and implements engineering best practices that align with CBM needs.
    10. Participates with other senior managers in establishing strategic plans and objectives.
    11. Understands—and ensures engineering practices support—the structure, systems, and processes that enhance CBM research and clinical trials.
    12. Assists the Scientific Chair with preparation and monitoring of the annual budget including projections for capital expenditures and labor.
    13. Assists the Scientific Chair in developing and implementing large grant projects as well as group project management.
    14. Assists with commercialization of technologies, through development of strategic relationships with external partners, and management of the technology transfer process.
    15. Assists with the financial oversight of the CBM.
    16. Manages staff within the CBM group.
    17. Assumes responsibility for the recruitment, selection, and hiring of staff within reporting structure.
    18. Collaborates with other top managers to establish CBM policies consistent with Shirley Ryan AbilityLab policy.
    19. May represent the CBM in Shirley Ryan AbilityLab leadership meetings and activities. as needed.
    20. Performs all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of Shirley Ryan AbilityLab and CBM.

     

    Reporting Relationships

     

    1. Reports directly to the Scientific Chair, CBM.

     

     

     

     

     

    Required Skills Required Experience

     

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required

     

    1. A professional level of knowledge in engineering technology generally acquired through the completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Biomedical or Electrical Engineering, or Industrial Design. Post-graduate coursework is desirable.
    2. Minimum of 12 years of product development experience, including time developing medical devices.
    3. Five or more years of experience managing engineers as direct reports.
    4. Experience participating in corporate development of methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for projects, programs, and people.
    5. Ability to work on complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth knowledge of the interactions among mechanical design, electronics, software, and external inputs.
    6. An accountable mindset that takes ownership of meeting goals and milestones.
    7. Experience with directing and controlling the activities of a functional area through managers.
    8. Ability to acts as advisor to subordinate(s) to meet schedules and/or resolve technical problems.
    9. Experience developing project plans that ensure budgets and schedules meet funding agency requirements and corporate requirements.
    10. Ability to plan, staff, budget, and manage expense priorities.
    11. Experience in identifying, recommending, and implementing changes to methods that improve engineering practice within an organization.
    12. Excellent people skills
    13. Good writing and speaking skills

     

    Working Conditions

     

    1. Normal office environment with little or no exposure to dust or extreme temperature.
