The Texas Family Literacy Initiative is a part of the AmeriCorps network of state and national service programs that engages 80,000 Americans each year in intensive service to meet critical needs in communities throughout the nation. This program provides literacy services to adults, in Houston, Literacy Services include:
English as a Second Language (ESL)
Adult Basic Education (ABE)
High School Equivalency (HSE) preparation
Workplace Literacy/Workforce Infusion
Computer Literacy
What do we look for in candidates?
Our positions are dynamic, well-rounded, and fun! We strive to build a diverse team of individuals who want to commit to national service.
Experience in education and/or working with diverse populations is preferred.
A willingness to share your knowledge, to learn from others, and to grow as an individual is necessary.
Applicants should be comfortable with both independent and team-based work that includes team meetings, group planning, reflection, and community service projects.
Qualified applicants will serve as full time ESL, ABE, and HSE instructors with adult education organizations throughout the Houston. This is an 11-month temporary position in which they complete 1700 hours of service from August 2019-July 2020. In exchange for their service, members receive the following benefits:
$13,732 annual stipend
Health Insurance
$6095 education award issued after completion of service
Valuable experience and over 100 hours of professional development
Joining a national network of over 80,000 federally recognized service members
Education
Bachelor’s Degree preferred. Extensive work experience may be supplemented for education.
