    About 1 in 5 Houston adults is considered illiterate, experiencing difficulty in completing tasks such as filling out job applications. The goal of the Houston Adult Literacy Project is to build the capacity of adult education and literacy organizations in Houston, which support low income, low literacy adult learners to help them to obtain and grow the skills they need to become self-sufficient and improve their qualities of life. Take action against adult illiteracy by becoming a Volunteer Coordinator VISTA, serving with YMCA International Services. The YMCA is a worldwide movement with a presence in over 120 countries. The hallmark of all YMCAs is that each is a grassroots organization focused on addressing local community needs. YMCA International Services is a unique branch of the Y of Greater Houston and seeks to meet the needs of Houston’s significant refugee and immigrant communities. We provide comprehensive programs that focus on building human assets and fostering self-sufficiency. YMCA International Services serves over 11,000 newcomers annually providing comprehensive services in resettlement, employment, case management, cultural orientation, education, immigration, and medical advocacy.

    Member Duties: If you are passionate about serving the Houston community, become a Volunteer Coordinator VISTA and play a vital role in building volunteer capacity to serve the low-income-low literacy adult clients by supporting YMCA International’s volunteer program. You will have the opportunity to design, implement, grow, evaluate, and evolve the volunteer program through projects such as: developing and implementing regular volunteer training/orientations, collaborating with department leadership in the development and posting of volunteer job descriptions, and evaluating current volunteer positions and department needs.

    Work Schedule: Full Time

    Minimum Requirements:

    Applicants must hold one of the following citizenship statuses: US citizen, US National, Lawful Permanent Resident Aliens or is a person residing in a state that have the following legal residency classifications: refugee, asylum or asylee, temporary protected status, or deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) status. Applicants must be at least 18 or older and have a high school diploma or GED.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    · Ability to work well collaboratively with a team

    · Attention to detail

    · Good organization and time management skills

    · Ability to handle multiple projects at once

    · Effective oral and written communication skills

    · Experience with or interest in serving multicultural community members

    · Bachelor’s degree
