Position Title: Financial Counselor
Reports to: Alliance Financial Empowerment Center Program Manager
Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM-5:00 PM
FLSA Status: Exempt
Location: 6719 W Montgomery Rd. or 7037 Capitol St.
Description: Carry out financial counseling and case management operations of The Alliance Financial Empowerment Center (AFEC) financial programs for low-to-moderate income residents in the greater Houston area. Perform marketing activities; process new participants, participant training, and follow-up counseling. Maintain internal reporting databases. Maintain file documentation for participants. Assist AFEC Program Manager as requested.
Main duties include:
Recruit participants from target population
Participate in all outreach assignments given by AFEC Program Manager
Provide one-on-one financial counseling
Identify client goals through motivational interviewing
Coach clients in the use of goal-setting and action plans
Interview prospective clients and explain AFEC programs to them
Determine and document participant eligibility
Serve as budgeting, credit, and savings plan counselor for participants
Schedule, coordinate, document any participant training and related activities
Maintain confidentiality of participant case files per established policy
Coach clients about financial services (loans, credit cards, financial programs) and credit reports
Review deposit activity reports and make follow-up calls on deposits past due clients
Prepare any needed documentation for asset disbursement
Maintain contact information for trainers
Maintain client records in applicable databases and prepare reports as needed
Report program outcomes to AFEC Program Manager by established deadlines
Meet or exceed project outcome goals
Acquire necessary job training/certifications to perform job duties
Must consistently demonstrate the ability to independently produce positive business outcomes aligned with organizational strategic initiatives and goals
Ensure full compliance with agency policy and/or, but not limited to all applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations as related to job function
Present workshops on a variety of financial topics as needed
Work with other AFEC counselors to execute tasks assigned by AFEC Program Manager
Conduct research and other assigned tasks by AFEC Program Manager
Reports directly to AFEC Program Manager and is accountable for achieving project outcomes
Provide financial counseling to clients at assigned locations
Perform other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications and experience at this Level
Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred
Associate’s required; Bachelor’s degree preferred in Finance/Economics or related field
Minimum of three (3) or more years’ background in personal finance; extensive experience providing information on and help accessing financial services which are available in Houston (and beyond) including budgeting/savings tools and financial products/services available to the community
Proficient in Microsoft Office including Excel and other job related software/e-technology/cloud based solutions
Must successfully complete all applicable certifications and credentialing
Demonstrated cross-cultural understanding and skills working with the immigrant community;
Case management experience
Basic computer skills in Microsoft Word and EXCEL and other job related software/e-technology/cloud based solutions
Strong interpersonal skills
Ability to communicate and respond to questions in a professional and knowledgeable manner; multi-task and remain detailed and organized; work independently, maintain confidentiality and strong client service
Consistently demonstrate strong problem-solving skills and a creative approach for generating new ideas with the principles of continuous improvement
Ability to follow specific instructions and adhere to safety guidelines
Must have valid driver’s license, clear driving record, auto liability insurance and reliable transportation as required to drive on company business.
