Job Description
BRIEF JOB OBJECTIVES: Responsible for the efficient daily classroom activities, assessment and programming for preschool children, with various educational handicaps in a preschool class. Supervise one teacher assistant and teacher aide as well as college students and volunteers assigned to the classroom. Actively support the use of developmentally appropriate practices, as defined by the National Association of the Education of Young Children, while providing services to children.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Maintains a clean and well organized classroom and office. Interacts with children in a developmentally appropriate manner. Develops and implements developmentally appropriate curricula for preschool children under supervision of Education Coordinator responsible for classroom Develops Individualized Education Plan (IEP) recommendations on each preschooler for CPSE. Attends CPSE meetings. Develops Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) recommendations on each early intervention child for DOH service coordinator Attends IFSP meetings Implements IEP / IFSP and updates IEP / IFSP based on educational assessments quarterly and as per requested. Daily oversight of teacher assistant, teacher aide, general education teacher, foster grandparents, college students and other volunteers. Provides input with annual performance appraisal for teacher assistant and aides assigned to the classroom. Confers with other staff members and therapists in providing comprehensive services to the children including weekly staffings, weekly planning meetings, parent-teacher conferences and home visits. Assists Education Coordinator in organizing and presenting evening parent meetings, teacher's meetings, and related activities. Maintains accurate, up-to-date comprehensive records pertaining to attendance, health matters, educational data, and specialize services for each child. Informs the nurse of all cases of suspected health problems and child neglect / abuse. Fosters a positive learning environment in which the children can acquire healthy self-images guiding them toward independence. NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Conducts self so as to best contribute to, promote and implement the mission, philosophy and policies of the agency. Encourages parents to be involved in their child's program and to serve as advocates for services in the community.. Performs other related duties as assigned by teacher or education supervisor. Attends all monthly staff meetings
QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
Ability to communicate effectively and interact appropriately with adults and children in one-to-one and group settings Ability to maintain focus and attention to individual children as well as the group of children in a busy preschool classroom Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team Ability to take initiative and be resourceful Ability to adjust to ideas, activities and best practices as well as variable classroom settings, routines and procedures Must conduct self in a professional and treat others in a respectful manner PHYSICAL & MENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be physically and mentally fit to provide developmentally appropriate care for and supervision of young children. Must have the physical abilities and stamina to participate in children's play and sustain active work throughout the day. Work with children requires: Ability to walk or run quickly Ability sit on the floor or in child-sized chairs for extended periods of time; Ability to bend at the waist, kneel or crouch to maintain eye contact with children; Ability to walk on rough or uneven ground Ability to lift children Ability to work in cold or hot outdoor conditions Ability to maintain the safety of the environment and children through visual, auditory, olfactory and tactile senses Must be able to move quickly and react calmly in response to an emergency Must exhibit good judgment in matters concerning the health and safety of children Must be able to maintain composure under pressure BS/BA IN SPECIAL EDUCATION AND CURRENT NYSJ SPECIAL EDUCATION CERTIFICATE (IF AFTER 2004, SPECIAL EDUCATION CERTIFICATION BIRTH TO GRADE 2). Valid NYS driver's license with safe driving record per agency policy Current physical examination documentation upon hire TB screen documentation upon hire WORKING CONDITIONS: Working conditions are typical for a childcare setting Exposure to bodily fluids, potentially infectious material and communicable diseases Variable work schedule with notice on a call-in basis SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS: MUST BE A CERTIFIED SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER
