  • Responsibilities

    The Controller will lead all day-to-day accounting operations and supervise a team of staff members, including functional oversight over general accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll and financial reporting. In addition the Controller will be responsible for ensuring that the accounting policies / internal controls follow "best practices" and comply with GAAP, compliance and regulatory requirements. The Controller will play a lead role in ensuring that policies and procedures are implemented efficiently and effectively at all operations. This individual will also share responsibility in establishing and recommending to management, economic strategies, objectives, and policies for company that maintain financial compliance and support The Art Institutes' plans and strategic initiatives.

    KEY JOB ELEMENTS:

    1. Develop, implement and monitor new and existing policies and procedures that ensure operating effectiveness, safeguarding of assets and information, and financial reporting compliance with GAAP and various statutory requirements.
    2. Manages monthly accounting close process insuring timeliness and accuracy of the financial reports and statements
    3. Maintain, make improvements and enhancements to accounting systems and the related policies and procedures responsibilities include fund accounting, general ledger, financial reporting, AR / billing / collections, payroll, accounts payable, revenue/ expense, fixed assets, etc.
    4. Manage preparation of the internal financial statements, prepares timely and relevant financial analyses, and provide financial reporting to the CFO.
    5. Guide and manage the continuous development of financial accounting systems and processes, and partner with all functional department heads, to maximize human resource efficiencies and ensure reporting and internal control requirements are achieved.
    6. Report and interpret results of operations to senior       management in a timely manner, provide guidance/assistance/due diligence on critical financial decisions for the Arts Institutes including acquisitions and major contractual arrangements; provide information and advice on accounting matters to campus operations and senior management.
    7. Participate in preparation and management of budgets and forecasts, including corporate overhead allocations; budget and forecast of balance sheet accounts; provide guidance on impact of emerging and existing accounting matters on The Art Institutes' budgets and forecasts.
    8. Arrange and manage the audits of the company's accounts, including external financial statement audits and internal control audits, and serve generally as the principal contact with company's external auditors.
    9. Other special projects as required by senior management or operational needs.

    ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

    REPORTS TO: Chief Financial Officer

    SUPERVISES: General Ledger Accounting staff

    POSITION SPECIFICATIONS:

    1. Bachelor's degree in Accounting; CPA required; MBA preferred; Big 4 or 6 experience preferred.
    2. 10 years of relevant experience, with at least 5 years of increasing general supervisory responsibility of staff that performs such functions.
    3. At least 3 years of experience in non-profit education.
    4. Technically adept in all areas of accounting and financial management, including compliance with GAAP and regulatory requirements
    5. Demonstrated ability to independently research and conclude on emerging accounting concepts and standards, and assess and advise on implications on overall operations.
    6. Demonstrated ability to develop, implement and manage computer-based accounting systems.
    7. Ability to exercise sound judgment, assess risk and make sound business decisions.
    8. Demonstrated success and ability to work efficiently and independently in a fast-paced environment. 
    9. Ability to function as an effective leader, ensuring a collaborative team oriented environment
    10. Ability to collaborate effectively with Art Institutes functional leaders.
