    THE COLLEGE PREPARATORY SCHOOL

    PART-TIME WRITING ASSISTANT POSITION

    STARTING JULY 1, 2021

    The College Preparatory School, an independent high school in Oakland, California, seeks a part-time Writing Assistant (the hours are to be determined) to the College Counseling Department beginning July 1, 2021. Candidates should have a strong interest in working in a multicultural community and be eager to embrace spirited intellectual challenges in a rewarding academic environment. College Prep comprises a community of life-long learning and actively encourages and supports the professional development of all of its members. The College Prep College Counseling program is unique, innovative, and rigorous. It empowers College Prep students to identify and seek out best-fit learning communities as they prepare to apply to college.

    Qualifications and desired characteristics:

    • Graduate degree in English or relevant field of study
    • Experience working in high schools and colleges
    • Expertise in and desire to coach a wide variety of learners and writers (at all levels of ability)
    • Commitment to working with high school students outside of the classroom as part of our advising system and other programs
    • Demonstrated cultural competence
    • Exceptional writing, organizational, and communication skills
    • Ability to effectively liaise with the faculty
    • Patience, flexibility, and a collaborative spirit

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Work closely with College Counseling and students applying to college, identifying promising writing topics and ensuring that students are on track to meet multiple deadlines with clean, revised, proofread essays for all their applications (12-15 colleges, on average, per student)
    • Recognize when students need additional support and intervene early in the process
    • Provide appropriate feedback to students in a timely manner
    • Be available for significant in-person, on-campus meetings with 88 to 95 students
    • Teach writing in small workshops
    • Write letters of recommendation for the senior class (distinctive, 600-700 word narratives that will include input from the director)
