    DEAN OF FACULTY

    FULL-TIME POSITION, STARTING JULY 1, 2021

    The College Preparatory School, an independent high school in Oakland, California, seeks a full-time Dean of Faculty beginning July 1, 2021. The Dean of Faculty reports to the Head of School, and works closely with the Assistant Head of School, Dean of Equity and Belonging, and other senior administrators in the overall leadership and management of the School. Their role is to bring expertise, voice, empathy, and perspective to the work of recruiting, supporting, developing, and retaining a dynamic, diverse, and talented faculty.

    Candidates for this role should have a commitment to working in a diverse and multicultural community and be eager to embrace spirited intellectual challenges in a rewarding academic environment.

    Essential tasks and responsibilities:

    • Work with Department Heads to voice faculty perspectives while also clearly communicating and implementing school leadership priorities and policies;
    • Coordinate and support the work of the Department Heads, encouraging clear communication between faculty and administration;
    • Work with Department Heads and the Assistant Head to determine staffing, sectioning and hiring needs;
    • Coordinate and support faculty recruitment;
    • Oversee new faculty on-boarding, including orientation, mentoring, and acculturation meetings;
    • Advise and coach faculty members on pedagogy, classroom management, and other issues related to professional performance, including coordinating the first-through third-year faculty evaluation process;
    • Administer the professional development program, including the budget, for teachers and student-facing staff;
    • Foster a healthy and sustaining climate for the adult members of the community;
    • Teach one class and serve as a faculty advisor.

    Qualifications and desired characteristics:

    • Bachelor's or graduate degree;
    • A devotion to the art and craft of teaching, including demonstrated teaching experience at either the secondary school or college level;
    • Excellent collaborative, organizational, and written and verbal communication skills;
    • Supervisory experience in an educational setting;
    • Demonstrated leadership and facilitation skills;
    • Enthusiasm for fostering an inclusive and equitable workplace in ways that strengthen a culture of belonging;
    • Passion for lifelong learning, professional growth, leadership, and community building;
    • Patience, flexibility, emotional intelligence, energy and a collaborative spirit.
