    Job Description

    Ascent Funding is an award-winning, rapidly growing private FinTech company that is on a mission to revolutionize the way people pay for college. We are looking for a LOAN UNDERWRITER to join our team in the heart of downtown San Diego, CA (well, virtually during COVID).

    WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING: The Ascent UNDERWRITER is responsible for the review and processing of new student loan application requests in a paperless environment. Underwriters work closely with Customer Service Representatives and Loan Processors to ensure the accurate and timely underwriting of Ascent Student Loans. 

    IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL:

    • Review student loan credit applications and render an appropriate credit decision within credit policy requirements and in compliance with all regulations.
    • Review and verify the accuracy of credit reports and borrower provided documents and identify red flags within the documentation.
    • Provide prompt, accurate communication and responses to all internal and external customer inquiries as it relates to income and credit scenarios, documentation requirements, and the loan underwriting process.
    • Collaborate on operational processes across multiple departments.

    DESIRED SKILLS & EXPERTISE:

    • High school diploma or GED required, Associate’s degree preferred.
    • Two years of loan processing and/or underwriting experience, years of student loan underwriting experience desired.
    • Experience working with income documents and income calculations.
    • Experience reviewing and interpreting credit bureau reports on a tradeline basis.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Good computer skills and a working knowledge of common business and application software.
