    The Diversity and Inclusion Internship Program at The Henry Ford is a cohort-based program that offers professional development, mentorship, and networking opportunities. We invite diverse candidates* who are curious about careers in the museum world to become a part of our legacy and take it forward. FOR WINTER 2023, INTERNSHIPS WILL LAST 15 WEEKS, PROJECTED TO BEGIN ON JANUARY 23 AND CONCLUDE ON MAY 5. ALL INTERNSHIPS ARE PAID OPPORTUNITIES.

    HOW WILL WE WORK TOGETHER?  

    The HISTORICAL CLOTHING PRODUCTION AND ALTERATIONS INTERN can anticipate working fully on-site, which requires the ability to commute to The Henry Ford campus in Dearborn, MI. 

    The Studio at The Henry Ford oversees the construction, fitting, alterations, and maintenance of all historical reproduction garments, essentially bringing our stories of innovation to life. As our Historical Clothing Production and Alterations Intern, you will work alongside the Studio Sewing Team to produce textile soft goods, uniforms, and special event costumes used for interpretive and exhibit purposes. This is a unique opportunity to perform fittings, operate industrial sewing and laundry machines, and make efficient alterations in a professional environment.  

    You will also be assigned a historical reproduction garment that you will construct from start to finish under the guidance of our tailor. This is an opportunity to learn higher-level techniques and create a unique piece for your portfolio.   

    Your primary responsibilities will include:  

    • Assisting with measurements, fittings, and alterations  
    • Assisting in clothing and soft goods construction  
    • Performing daily repairs and maintenance on period clothing, historical reproduction textiles, uniforms, and costumes  
    • Providing wardrobe and laundry support  
    • Participating in daily cleaning of studio workspace and organization of stock room  
    • Assisting with craft and millinery projects as needed

      

    WHAT SHOULD YOU HAVE?  

    • At least 3 years of education/training focused on garment construction, textile, fashion, costume, or related field  
    • Advanced hand and machine sewing skills (Industrial machine experience is a plus) 
    • Experience in garment alterations  
    • Ability to sketch and translate a design to paper   
    • Availability Monday-Friday and at least one weekend day each week

    The final stage of the interview and selection process requires a sewing skills test that will be conducted on-site.
