The Intercept is looking for an energetic reporter to join its politics team — someone who wants to cover Congress and the Biden administration as a meaningful enterprise rather than a sporting event, but who wants to do so with a high metabolism. The ideal candidate has a track record of breaking news online and can shift comfortably between short scoops, investigative work, and news analysis.
The reporter must be able to work collaboratively with other reporters, researchers, and editors at The Intercept. The reporter is expected to be a self-starter who can generate their own story ideas, as well as quickly respond to assignments from editors and use sources and documents to write exclusive stories. Further responsibilities include any other appropriately related projects/duties as assigned.
Reporters who live or are willing to move to Washington, D.C. are preferred, but other strong candidates will be considered. Members of traditionally underrepresented groups in media are strongly encouraged to apply.
Background & Qualifications:
● At least 3-5 years of experience
● Track record of both breaking news and making thoughtful reported interventions in the public conversation
● An almost instinctive familiarity with the contours of political debates in Washington
● Comfort with and interest in writing both fast-turnaround posts and longer, investigative pieces
● Experience with FOIA, lobbying, and campaign finance records
● Ability to file copy that's clean, accurate, and provocative, appealing to both a niche and broad audience
● An independent perspective, a strong voice, and an understanding of The Intercept's mission
● Ability to respond to shifting priorities and demands, based on organizational needs and the news cycle
● Ability to work well both on teams and independently, and receive constructive feedback
