    Job Description

    FIRM OVERVIEW The Law Office of Philip M. Gommels is a boutique criminal defense law firm based in Houston, Texas. We defend all types of criminal accusations--including sexual assaults, violent crime, white collar crime, etc. We specialize in defending the accused who suffer from mental illness and addiction. We take a holistic approach to criminal defense--striving not only to keep our clients from incarceration and protect their permanent records, but also to leave them with happier, more fulfilling lives on the other side.

    POSITION OVERVIEW We are seeking a compassionate and thorough paralegal interested in social justice and taking part behind the scenes in fighting for justice--often for the most vulnerable. Compassion for our clients and a desire to understand their stories is essential. The paralegal will gain experience communicating with a variety of stakeholders, exposure to fact patterns in criminal law and virtual and live networking opportunities across the criminal defense and social justice communities in Houston and beyond.

    This position is ideal for a recent university graduate looking for a fulfilling career in criminal law or a paralegal, court clerk, or legal secretary with experience in Houston criminal law space.

    The position is full-time, Monday through Friday, 8am-5pm with some work required after-hours and on weekends. Work-from-home preferred most of the time during the COVID-19 pandemic--though some appearances in the office will be needed from time-to-time. Salary will be commensurate with experience and abilities.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Managing client intake from the first call to the signing of a contract
    • Drafting and filing written motions, subpoenas, and other legal documents
    • Conducting research to support legal proceedings
    • Requesting records and following up with agencies
    • Representing our firm in communications with clients, court staff and colleagues
    • Monitoring and ensuring compliance with statutory and court-imposed deadlines
    • Recording and storing client information
    • Managing progress of cases--especially expungement and nondisclosure petitions

    ​QUALIFICATIONS:

    • 4-year degree from an elite university preferred
    • Attention to detail and ability to learn and maintain our organization’s systems and procedures
    • Willingness to receive and give honest feedback
    • Outstanding written communication skills
    • Excellent skills in managing multiple projects at various stages
    • Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred
    • Previous experience as a paralegal or other legal field is a plus, but not necessary
