Position Title: Virtual Storage Engineer (Linux/Windows)
Position Type: Contract to Hire
Position Location: Remote (2 days a week onsite in DC when needed)
US Citizen with clean background (public trust, criminal, drug screens)
Responsibilities:
- Check help desk database for entries on server and server resource issues; prioritize and respond to help desk tickets as appropriate.
- Configuration and deployment of new client hardware and software applications
- Ensures daily, weekly, monthly checks are completed and internal operating procedures are followed.
- Perform file system configuration and management; define and perform server backups and recovery procedures.
- Recommend and execute modifications to server environment in order to improve efficiency, reliability, and performance.
- Conduct research on server hardware, software, and protocols in support of procurement and development efforts.
- Manage enterprise directory services and supporting server infrastructure.
- Coordinate and collaborate with network engineering, business application, and database administration function to ensure availability, reliability, and scalability of corporate servers to meet business demands.
- Act as project lead in the design and review of new server systems, applications, and hardware; conduct capacity planning as needed.
- Submit Knowledge Base articles, update technical and support documentation.
- Responsible for storage, backup, testing, and recovery of virtualized server environment consisting of 70 Windows and Linux Servers
- Support, troubleshoot, update, and monitor server infrastructure and ensure availability and capacity of Windows/Linux server environment
- Provide incident response and root cause/mitigation analysis for major incidents in the virtual server environment
- Maintain inter-site and intra-site replication between storage components for redundancy and disaster recovery contingencies
- Coordinate with other engineers, the customer, and vendors to mitigate area of concerns with respect to backup testing and develop solutions to mitigate risks and concerns
- Manage vCenter infrastructure to add and remove servers, storage and network components
- Leverage Windows Update Tool and Solarwinds to perform patch management and remediation of virtual server environment
- Stay abreast of industry virtual storage solutions being provided by OEMs
- Provide on-call after hours support to support Helpdesk Managed Services Team in incident and problem resolution
- Work with the service maintenance providers (HP, Dell, Microsoft, etc.) and ensure the goals and objectives associated with data center, network, server and endpoint services area are achieved
- Perform emergency and non-emergency service outages and configuration changes to include updates in coordination and mutual agreement with the Change Control Board (CCB)
- Participate in Change Management, CCB, and CAB decision making meetings
- Support engineering projects and provide regular updates to management on progress and issues of assigned projects
- Coordinate with Systems Administration/Physical Server Engineer to maintain an updated Gold Image for the customer leveraging Microsoft Deployment Tool (MDT) to perform baseline imaging all endpoints
- Coordinate with Systems Administration/Physical Server Engineer to support/drive quarterly baseline image updates as directed by the customer
- Coordinate with our Iron Bow Managed Services Team to monitor critical virtual server infrastructure using Solarwinds
- Coordinate with Iron Bow Managed Services Team to perform regular server updates and upgrades for the virtual server environment during non-production hours
- Support the documentation on processes, changes, and implementations
- Patch virtual servers within vCenter
- Support Desktop refreshes (every 4 years)
Skills:
- University degree in the field of computer science or management information systems or a related discipline.
- At least five years’ equivalent work experience in a technical analytical position responsible for administering server and/or storage environments.
- Exceptional abilities at load balancing, clustering, and caching procedures and processes.
- Experience installing, configuring, and maintaining all manners of server hardware, including Dell, HP, VMWare ESXi, and vCenter.
- Experience with server performance tuning and monitoring tools.
- Basic knowledge of Network components and topologies.
- Experience with Linux OS.
- Knowledge of Virtual Private Cloud environments (VPCs) Servers (Amazon Linux and Microsoft Windows) Amazon Machine Instances running in EC2 AWS RDS for MySQL and MS-SQL Server Simple Storage Services (S3), Amazon Glacier Storage for long-term archival storage, Identity Authentication Management including Windows Active Directory and ADFS, Google G Suite, VMware tools, Windows OS, Redhat, SQL 2016, NetApp CloudSync, Lucid Charts (Account Management).
- Experience using Solarwinds.
- Scripting experience.
- Ability to create and/or update processes, complex diagrams (network or otherwise) using Lucid Charts or comparable application.
- Ability to balance and prioritize workload and deadlines, and work independently and in a team environment.
- SAN experience, with familiarity in Dell Unity and Isilon is a plus.
- VSAN experience also a plus.
- Current VMware Certification, such as VCP-DCV/DT, with strong experience implementing and troubleshooting VMware vSphere 5.x/6.x, or equivalent
