    Job Description

    Mill Direction focuses on the production of work from concept to delivery for any screen, leaning on The Mill’s visual effects legacy to create both live-action and digitally crafted work. We represent and roster over 40 directors worldwide across our London, Berlin, New York, Chicago and Los Angeles locations. This homegrown roster of talent covers an extensive and eclectic list of specialties, from design, animation and visual effects oriented work, to projects that lean into live-action, talent direction and emerging technologies.   From strategic creative conception, to production and delivery, we use our unrivaled expertise to craft memorable visual experiences to engage & captivate audiences.

     

    The right candidate is someone who can have act as the Creative Center Point for directors' treatments.  He or she will work closely with the director and pitch producer, will listen in on client creative calls, partake in internal creative briefs with pitch artists; and ultimately be responsible for the design ,layout and assembly of the deck. Sometimes, he or she will pull visual reference and build up a searchable library of images; the right candidate will have good taste, an opinion about what he or she is receiving from the artists involved, and have a deep knowledge of film.  This person should want to be a director and be passionate about film-making.

    This person will be familiar with the full Adobe suite and have a good understanding of graphic design. This person will have taken a film history class. This person will have taken an art history class. This person will have made a short film. This person will have good spelling and grammar.

    This person will have some knowledge of filming techniques and camera terminology.

    This person will have the ability to multi-task across multiple projects, remain calm under pressure, and address creative feedback/notes while working to deadlines.

    This person will have the ability to use a Canon 5D for reference or test stills shoots.

    This person will have an appreciation and curiosity about a variety of design styles, live action approaches, emerging technology and experiential projects.

     

     

    Be conceptually strong.  The ability to riff, bend, remix and discuss ideas with a director makes them extremely valuable. Have sophisticated photographic sensibility.  Taking creative guidelines for a particular kind of cinematography and finding the reference.  This is harder than it sounds. Command an understanding of Design language.  Many of our treatments include design and CG elements.  You must speak the language to put it on paper or hone things down.

    Be a great damn writer.  Efficacy, metaphor, arc and weaponized brevity are all things we look for.  You will need to be able to take everything from a jumble of notes (and create order from chaos) or clear language that just needs grammatical improvements; and be great at both. Have layout chops.  Print layout is largely determined by our various templates, but balancing typography, white space and visuals is a skill. It’s an underrated job. It’s a hugely important job and it’s an amazing position at a great company. You will be getting some of the best possible training and opportunities.
