    Job Description

The Chinese Language Fellowship Program (CLFP) awards fellowships to American PhD students in political science for one academic year of full-time intensive Chinese language training, generally in Taiwan or China.

    ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

To be eligible for a fellowship, an applicant will:

    • Be enrolled in a PhD program in political science, with a focus on China, at a U.S. university. (In exceptional cases, the selection committee may review applications from PhD students in other policy-relevant academic disciplines, such as modern history or international political economy.)
    • Demonstrate, through transcripts from classes taken and/or the results of language assessment tests, an intermediate Chinese language ability. The fellowship is NOT intended to help beginner students of Chinese.
    • Be able to devote themselves to full-time intensive Chinese language study for one academic year. The fellowship is NOT intended to support substantive doctoral research.
    • Desire to advance U.S. public policy toward China through improved expertise and understanding, or to contribute to scholarly research and teaching on China in order to develop future generations of Chinese specialists.
    • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the United States at the time of application.

    APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

To be considered for a fellowship, an applicant must submit:

    • A two-page summary resume (full academic CVs will not be reviewed).
    • A two-page letter that addresses your qualifications for the fellowship; your proposed plan of Chinese language study, and how your proposed Chinese language program will contribute to your language training, doctoral studies, and future plans.
    • A letter of recommendation from your current academic supervisor.
    • A letter of recommendation from a recent Chinese language teacher.
    • A complete application form, answering questions about academic experience, Chinese language skills, Chinese language class taken, and providing the names of three academic/professional referees.
    • Official (electronic) transcripts from all educational institutions you are currently attending or from which you have received a degree.
    • A list of any academic and professional honors received.

    LANGUAGE PROGRAM SELECTION

Applicants will select their own preferred institution for the intensive language program as part of their fellowship application, although the Advisory Council and program team have developed a recommended list of Chinese language programs (available on the CLFP website). Applicants should also consult with their academic supervisors about programs that are considered acceptable by their home university. Preference will be given to programs in Taiwan and China so that fellows are able to take full advantage of opportunities to immerse themselves in a Chinese language environment.

    APPLICATION DEADLINE AND SELECTION PROCESS

Applications are due by midnight (12:00am PT) on JANUARY 25, 2019. The Fellowship Program team will review all applications and make recommendations to an independent selection committee that will make final decisions in March. Awards will be conferred and announced in mid-April 2019, prior to the registration deadlines for universities in Taiwan and China offering intensive language programs.
