    SUMMARY:

    The work completed by the Behavior Support Specialist (BSS) involves the functional assessment and development of strategies to support Adult IDD consumers experiencing behavioral difficulties. Assignments are varied in nature. The work setting is varied and may include residential homes, day programs, and/or community settings. Workers in this classification report to the BSS Director.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Develops and maintains a Behavioral Support Service Program in a multi-county area to support adult consumers experiencing behavioral difficulties. • Oversees the functional assessment and development of strategies to support consumers experiencing behavioral difficulties; develops and provides ongoing review of Behavior Support Plans and Restrictive Procedures Plan; designs plans which present positive practices as support strategies in collaboration with the consumer, family, and team members. • Supervises a staff of BSS workers and ensures that Behavior Support Plans are followed and that such staff understands the commitment and compliance to achieving goals set forth based on individual consumer assessments. • Ensures that training is provided to the staff, family members, and consumers so that the implementation and all aspects of the Behavior Support Plans are understood and adhered to; monitors the progress of the behavior Collects and evaluates behavioral data.• Observes participant in various settings for the purpose of developing a behavior support plan.• Collaborates with the participant, their family, and their team for the purpose of developing a behavior support plan that must include positive practices and will not include restraint procedures (physical, chemical, or mechanical) as support strategies.• Conducts comprehensive functional assessments of presenting issues such as aggression, self-injurious behavior, law offending behavior (sexual or otherwise).• Develops and maintains behavior support plans which utilize positive strategies to support the participant based on functional behavioral assessments.• Conducts training related to the implementation of behavior support plans for the participant, family members, and staff.• Implements activities and strategies identified in the participant’s behavior support plan. • Monitors implementation of the behavior support plan and revises plans as needed.• Collaborates with the participant, their family, and their team in order to develop positive interventions to address specific presenting issues.• Completes required paperwork related to data collection, progress reporting, and development of annual planning material on a timely basis in line with regulations and company policies and procedures.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT:

    • The work environment varies and is largely community based and can vary from office settings to facility based settings and at times residential homes.     TRAVEL:

    • This position requires an extensive amount of travel throughout northeast and/or central Pennsylvania.

    REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

    • Master’s Degree in Human Services or a closely related field;or, A Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services or closely related field if under the close supervision of a Master’s Level Clinician.• Must have a valid Pennsylvania Driver’s license with good driving record. • Computer skills (MS Office Suite software use, ability to learn Pennsylvania programmatic portals – HCSIS, PROMISe, etc…), ability to navigate the usage of the Avatar Electronic Health Record system

    PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

    • Master’s degree in psychology, social work, or education• Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA)

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

    • Pennsylvania Licensed Behavior Specialist (LBS) preferred

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Language SkillsAbility to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents and instructions. Ability to respond effectively to sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to clearly explain instructions in both written and oral media.• Mathematical SkillsBasic mathematic ability including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Use of MS Excel to aid in mathematical work.• Reasoning AbilityAbility to read instructional bulletins and/or participate in training sessions then translate information provided into day-to-day work duties.

    ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Knowledge of the basic principles of applied psychology, behavioral analysis, and related behavioral sciences.• Knowledge of intellectual/developmental disabilities, their care and treatment, and their social implications in relation to the consumer and his/her environment.• Knowledge of psychological techniques employed in the modification of human behavior.• Knowledge of current psychological theories and practices.• Ability to prepare clear and concise reports and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to conduct Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA) as needed.
