    SUMMARY

    A person in this position functions under the working title of Licensed Practical Nurse when working in an ICF/ID or Medical Compliance Specialist in non-ICF/ID programs. Assignments are technical in nature and are performed under the supervision of the Director of Nursing. A person working in this position in an ICF/ID also is provided oversight by the Qualified Intellectual Disability Professional/Regional Director.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    Administers medication in accordance with the physician's orders, under the supervision of the Director of Nursing.

    Provides direct care to residents by utilizing standard nursing techniques and following care plans.

    Observes, interprets, records, and reports those signs, symptoms and processes which indicate the residents' responses to actual or potential health problems.

    Provides health promotion and maintenance through teaching, guidance, and counseling the residents, families, and other members of staff.

    Participates in formal staff development program and continuing education program to enhance professional competence.

    Identifies actual and potential safety hazards within the assigned care area and takes appropriate action to eliminate them

    For Medical Compliance Specialist

    Participates as assigned on committees for quality improvement and related activities.

    Monitors medical regimes are appropriately implemented within prescribed written orders.

    Observes, records, and reports the effects of pharmacological agents and therapeutic treatments.

    Prepares and submits records and reports as assigned by Director of Nursing or other program managerial staff.

    For ICF/ID Licensed Practical Nurse

    Insures that medical regimes are appropriately implemented within prescribed written orders.

    Observes, records, and reports the effects of pharmacological agents and therapeutic treatments.

    Prepares and submits records and reports as required in accordance with ICF/IDD regulations.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

    There are no supervisory responsibilities associated with the Medical Compliance Specialist position; however, this person may serve as a coach and mentor for similar positions.

    In absence of the Regional Director/QIDP, Director of Nursing or Residential Program Supervisor, it is the responsibility of the nurse on duty to act as lead staff member in a supervisory capacity to ensure that policies and procedures are followed and also that required documentation is completed.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    The duties of this job require fine motor skills to write neat, legible notes, read and understand program documentation, and completing keyboarding entry.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT

    The work environment for this position varies between residential and community based settings. Employees are expected to support individuals both in their homes as well as in the community.     TRAVEL

    This position requires travel between various residential and office locations. A person in this position may be required to operate company vehicles to transport individuals on outings and/or to and from medical appointments.

    REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

    Completion of a State approved Licensed Practical Nursing course and possession of a current license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse as issued by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nurse Examiners.

    Knowledge of the theories and practice of Licensed Practical Nursing.

    Skill in applying basic nursing practices and methodology.

    Ability to observe, record, and report signs and symptoms of residents' actual or potential health status.

    Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.

    Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.

    Ability to establish and maintain effective communications with residents, families, and other members of the health care system.

    Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

    Ability to identify actual or potential health and safety hazards.

    Ability to acquire new knowledge, skills, and techniques required to maintain current in nursing practice.

    Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

    Ability to recognize the limitations of one's capabilities and to seek help and/or guidance when necessary.

    PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

    Experience working with individuals with intellectual disabilities is preferred.

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

    Current license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse issued by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing Examiners

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Language Skills

    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents and instructions. Ability to read and understand commonly accepted medical shorthand and jargon. Ability to respond effectively to sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to clearly explain instructions in both written and oral media to non-medical staff members.

    Mathematical Skills

    Basic mathematic ability including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

    Reasoning Ability

    Ability to read instructional memos and/or participate in training sessions then translate information provided into day-to-day work duties.
