QUALIFICATIONS
1. Has an understanding of early childhood education.
2. Demonstrates an ability to relate sensitively to people of all ages and varied backgrounds.
3. Possesses a professional manner, personal characteristics and mental abilities necessary to work with young children, including:
(a) respect for each child,
(b) sensitivity to individual’s needs and learning styles,
(c) ability to provide appropriate challenges to each child’s learning development,
(d) exceptional amount of patience and flexibility
4. Demonstrates an interest in upgrading professional qualifications by participation in a staff development program.
5. Meets all staff requirements of local and state regulatory agencies.
6. Maintains current First Aid and Pediatric CPR certification (school will cover costs)
7. Minimum six hours of training annually.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Provides for safety and well-being of students and staff at all times.
2. Assists the Classroom Teacher in ensuring an appropriate, stimulating program of activities, consistent with the school's philosophy.
3. Prepares snacks, oversees lunch, and oversees cleaning/disinfecting.
4. Supervises children outdoors on playground.
5. Assumes the leadership role in the class when the Classroom Teacher is absent.
6. Assumes responsibility for the care, maintenance, and cleanliness of the classroom, playground, and materials.
7. Assists in ensuring that the classroom and associated areas (including playground) meet all licensing, safety, and health requirements.
8. When student-teacher ratio allows, morning assistants are expected to assist with tasks necessary for maintenance of the facility and the instructional program, as assigned by the Classroom Teacher or administrative staff.
9. Communicates through the appropriate channels about any problems or concerns.
10. Attends all school events as listed in the school calendar as requested by the Administrator.
11. Fulfills cleaning and lock-up responsibilities.
12. Reports to assigned teacher and Head of School.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Person must have enough physical stamina to work effectively with young children and must be able to stand for lengthy number of hours, sit in child-sized chairs and/or on the floor. They also must have the ability to see and hear children and to lift 45 pounds. Person must speak, read, write, and understand English.
POSITION AND WORK HOURS
Be able to work 10 months out of the year following the school calendar. Work hours when school is in session are 8:15 am- 1:15pm. Morning assistants must assist with any opening or closing of school. Attendance at events outside of the normal work week or normal school hours is highly encouraged and sometimes required, depending on the event.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Ensures compliance with all local, state, and federal regulatory agencies.
2. Demonstrates a leadership capacity and growth mindset.
3. Serves as an ambassador to the school program.
4. Accepts state-mandated responsibility to report suspected child abuse or neglect directly to the appropriate department as outlined in the Staff Handbook.
5. Adheres to the American Montessori Society’s Code of Ethics.
