  • Responsibilities

    The Estimator is responsible for the activities that occur at the beginning of a project prior to the start of construction. Responsibilities include budgeting, scheduling and logistics planning and field productivity. Safety is the number one priority at Pepper Construction. The Estimator is expected to promote and exemplify safe work practices and ensure safety is appropriately budgeted in every project. The Estimator is expected to work with people at all levels of project management and field supervision to establish budget and operational priorities that help ensure a quality project.

    POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • General
      • Support the growth of operations.
      • Ensure customer satisfaction by identifying and exceeding client needs.
      • Provide leadership through building relationships, motivating others, providing clear direction, and cooperative teamwork.
      • Demonstrate strong leadership qualities with presentation skills, decisiveness, stature, innovation and accountability.
      • Communicate effectively; both written and verbal.
      • Demonstrate innovative problem-solving skills.
    • Bidding & Pricing
      • Thoroughly review construction documents
      • Perform detailed quantity takeoffs
      • Bid new projects
      • Budget new projects
      • Act as an internal resource for unit costs, production rates, and cost opinions
      • Assist with value engineering
    • Work planning and “turnover/hand-off” to project management
      • Provide detailed scope of work and any/all bid clarifications to PM
      • Provide bid “work plan”, specifically including planned crew size, productivity requirements, schedule, and site logistics
      • Provide detailed list of “at risk” bid items for labor, material, equipment, and/or subcontractors
      • Provide detailed list of safety and quality “concerns”, takeoff visuals and quantities, and bid breakdown information to PM
      • Provide equipment lists and sources, material lists and supplier quotes and subcontractor scopes and quotes to PM
    • Productivity management
      • Gather and analyze productivity data from PM’s
      • Formulate and maintain historical database of production based on types of jobs and types of conditions
      • Adjust bid rates based on actual production results
      • Visit under-performing jobsites to assist with resolutions

     Industry awareness

      • Monitor overall industry competitiveness and trends
      • Strategically seek and plan for pre-fabrication opportunities
      • Assist equipment division with plans for future equipment needs
      • Identify industry advances in materials, methods, and equipment and recommend company action.
      • Recognize and recommend suggestions for safety, productivity and quality improvement. 

    POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

    • Minimum 5 years construction estimating experience.
    • Experience using OnScreen Takeoff and QuickBid is preferred.
    • A bachelor’s degree is preferred.
    • Ability to build and maintain strong working relationships
    • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and as part of a team
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills
    • Detail oriented
