    Job Title: Mentor Job Category: Human ServicesLocation: Hampton Roads Travel Required: Community BasedReports to: Mentor Supervisor Position Type: Part-timeDESCRIPTION: Together Lives Change helps to empower youth in our community to make positive life choices that enable them to maximize their potential. Our mentoring program uses experienced professionals to commit to supporting, guiding, and being a friend to a young person in the community. The mentor can help youth develop and reach positive academic, career, and personal goals. MENTORS ROLE: 1. Take the lead in supporting a young person through an ongoing, one-to-one relationship2. Serve as a positive role model and friend3. Build the relationship by planning and participating in activities together4. Strive for mutual respect 5. Build self-esteem and motivation6. Help set goals and work toward accomplishing them7. Respond to crisis.SKILLS: 1. Ability to develop a rapport with mentees2. Active Listeners3. Empathetic4. Non-judgmental about people’s situation5. Able to work independently6. Good organizers; ability to collaborate with stakeholders7. Flexible8. Able to stay calm under pressureSPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Develop and sustain a long-term, protective and caring relationship with each child2. Work with and support mentees learning and growth 3. Set realistic expectations and goals based on each child’s strengths, talents, abilities and needs4. Teach life skills and help each child develop a talent/skill/area of interest5. Provide enrichment resources and activities that include opportunities for cultural awareness 6. Complete time summaries, activity journals, short-term plans, and evaluation materials accurately and on time 7. Attend and actively participate in team meetings and staff functions8. Maintain current driver’s license, good driving record, vehicle insurance and First Aid/CPR certificationQUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor degree in Human Services or related field (Psychology, Sociology, Child Development, etc) plus one year of experience. Mentoring experience with children considered statistically at-risk preferred.
