    TITLE: Assistant Director of Campus Activities 

      

    REPORTS TO: Director of Campus Activities 

     

    CAMPUS: Queens 

     

    JOB SUMMARY:  

     

    Reporting to the Director of Campus Activities, the Assistant Director will be primarily responsible for the coordination and execution of campus-wide activities, advising student organizations, and events and programs with a specific focus on niche programming. The assistant director will develop a comprehensive menu of programs and activities based on strategic planning and assessment, available and negotiated resources, and the Mission of the University and the Division of Student Affairs. The individual in this role will represent the office on various division-wide committees relating to the Strategic Priorities and work with students, staff, and faculty interested in creating inclusive, engaging, and lively programs geared toward student-centered activities that enhance campus life at St. John's University. 

     

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    • Develops, plans, and executes programming for campus-wide student engagement, including creating and coordinating activities and events for niche populations. 
    • Advises student organizations through theory-based practices with attention given to the development of individuals, the cohesiveness of the group, goal creation and execution, and programming  
    • Serves as the primary liaison working with the academic units and administrative offices that serve student organizations in streamlining partnerships and advising to promote academic success and connect students to the institution    
    • Assist in planning and implementing the Student Organization Leadership Training, encompassing on-campus workshops, conferences, and other leadership opportunities. 
    • Assist with training, mentoring, supervising, and evaluating the Campus Activities Graduate Assistants and Student Assistants, teams.  
    • Oversees the management of the student organization and activities database, accurately tracking information about organization membership, officers, events, and program participation   
    • Collaborates with Campus Activities staff and external departments and student organizations to plan and program large-scale events and activities, including event reservation, contract preparation, on-site decision-making, and all logistics  
    • Works collaboratively with university departments and partners to develop policies and procedures that meet the needs of the institution and student organizations   
    • Participates on committees through Student Government, Inc. and university-wide and division-wide committees and initiatives, including New Student Orientation  
    • Serve as the on-site decision-maker and supervisor for events 
    • Able and ready to provide in-person and virtual responsibility as needed 
    • Engage in cross-departmental projects as assigned to support strategic priorities of the Division of Student Affairs

     

     

    COMPETENCIES 

     

    • Event planning and student activities programming experience. 
    • Experience working with training and developing youth  
    • Experience working with diverse populations.  
    • Computer skills, including word processing, database, and spreadsheet applications.  
    • Familiarity with social media applications in promoting programming and events.  
    • Understanding of programmatic assessment and evaluation.  
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills.  
    • The ability to establish working relationships faculty, staff, and students required. Commitment to building an inclusive and diverse environment.  
    • Working knowledge of best practices in Student Affairs and current trends and technology in student activities, student leadership, and campus, local, state, and federal regulations.

      

     

    WORK ENVIRONMENT 

     

    This position operates in a professional office environment and the incumbent is required to use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, etc. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; move about; sit; to carry work; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; communicate. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 10 lbs. 

     

    POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK 

     

    This position is full-time and the expected hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This position regularly requires approximately 6 to 10 hours a month beyond the regular working schedule to perform some evening and weekend work. 

    Travel is primarily local and may include visits to the other NY campuses. 

     

    REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  

     

    • Bachelor’s degree 

    • At least one-year post-undergraduate experience preferred
