    ENTRY PAY (no previous experience): $77,785 / yearLATERAL PAY RANGE: Up to $90,725 / year, depending upon applicable experience. Topped out at $95,500 / year after five (5) years.NATURE OF WORK

    Frederick Police Officers maintain civil order and enforce laws and ordinances. Police Officers are responsible for the preservation of the public peace, protection of life and property, the prevention of crime, proper enforcement of the laws and ordinances of the Town, and other related duties and tasks as assigned. Each officer will be held to a high standard of performance within that structure.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    The duties listed herein are illustrative of the essential duties of the job, and do not include all duties that may be required.

    Fairly and impartially enforce all traffic laws including parking and bicycle violations by issuing a warning or summons.

    Faithfully and diligently patrol the Town of Frederick, and by his/her vigilance and activity render it difficult for anyone to commit a crime therein. When required to interrupt regular patrol to give attention to any complaint, call for assistance, arrest, or other emergency, he/she shall attend to such duties promptly and without unnecessary loss of time, resume patrolling the Town of Frederick.

    Investigate reported crimes and detect and apprehend those responsible.

    Enter reports into the computer and submit any other paperwork on all cases within twenty-four hours of the incident or before any days off occur.

    Keep his/her immediate supervisor apprised of the progress of assigned cases.

    Be responsible for the care and preservation of all physical evidence obtained at the scene of a crime. Following the disposition of a case, evidence will be returned to the owner, destroyed, or turned over to the Chief of Police according to policy.

    Properly care for and maintain all assigned equipment.

    Testify in court or Department of Motor Vehicle hearing when necessary.

    Works varying schedules and/or shifts, including swing shifts, overnights, weekends, holidays, etc. May be required to work overtime.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    Knowledge of Police practices, procedures, and equipment.

    Knowledge of basic computer skills.

    Knowledge of geographical area and surrounding areas.

    Ability to learn new concepts and methods of law enforcement.

    Ability to understand and follow oral and written directives and keep accurate records.

    Ability to communicate effectively in writing, including use of proper grammar and legible handwriting.

    Ability to successfully complete certification training and field officer training program.

    Strong observational skills or ability to develop them.

    Ability to obtain information through interview and interrogation.

    Ability to perform essential physical functions of the job.

    Ability to use and control firearms.

    Ability to learn and perform self-defense and control techniques.

    Ability to maintain and establish effective working relationships as necessitated by various work assignments.

    Ability to adapt quickly to situations, and to choose an effective, reasonable course of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances in each unique situation.

    Ability to work in a team environment.

    EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

    Twenty-one years of age or older, eligible to work in the U.S.

    High school graduate or possess a G.E.D. certificate.

    Current Colorado Peace Officer Certification, or must have a provisional Colorado POST Certificate by the time of hire.

    Must possess a valid Colorado driver’s license, provide proof of a safe driving record, and maintain a safe driving record for continued employment. Must have no felony convictions, and no history of domestic violence.

    Must have a history of personal and professional honesty, integrity, and good judgment. Preference will be given to applicants who have no history of use, sale, or possession of illegal substances. All applicants who reach the final stages of the selection process will be required to submit to and successfully pass a drug screen, thorough criminal and personal background check, psychological evaluation, polygraph examination, and a physical examination and agility test.

    Must be able to successfully qualify to possess a firearm in accordance with Federal and/or State regulations.

    Must be available to work various shifts when necessary, including overnights, swing shifts, weekends, holidays, etc.

    PHYSICAL WORKING ENVIRONMENT

    The physical demands listed herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential duties of this job. This list may not be all-inclusive.

    This work requires varying degrees of physical responses from sedentary work to very physically demanding work, due to the nature of unpredictable and unforeseeable events that characterize police work.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, see and hear, and to use hands to finger, handle, grasp or feel. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

    Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds and on occasion drag or carry up to 165 pounds.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in high, precarious places; in outside weather conditions, and with explosives and is occasionally exposed to fumes, airborne particles, or blood pathogens, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, risk of radiation, and vibration. The employee occasionally experiences hazards to personal safety from gun fire and physical confrontations. Periodically, the employee is in stressful situations.

    The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

    Employees may be exposed to inclement weather conditions, including moisture, humidity, and/or extreme temperatures, ranging from over 100 degrees to below zero degrees Fahrenheit.

    In order to retain employment as a Frederick Police Officer, all sworn personnel must successfully pass a Physical Ability Test once per year, as outlined in the Frederick Police Department’s Policy & Procedure Manual.
