JOB SUMMARY

Smyrna Police Department is hiring for the position of part-time School Crossing Guard. This position is responsible for directing pedestrians across the street and stopping traffic as necessary in the areas around schools during students' commute to and from school.

Applicants must be available to work 2 shifts per day (both morning and afternoon) Monday-Friday. Each shift is 1 hour, for a total of 10 hours per week. Start time for morning shift is between 7am and 8am and start time for afternoon shift is between 2pm and 3pm. This is a seasonal position during the school year from September to June.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Direct and control the movement of school children crossing the street at assigned locations
2. Stop/direct traffic as necessary to allow children to cross the street
3. Use equipment provided, including a whistle, crossing guard vest, handheld traffic sign, and radio
4. Communicate with dispatch center via radio

JOB REQUIREMENTS

• High School Diploma or GED preferred
• Experience interacting with children and the general public
• General knowledge of traffic laws, designated school zones and crossing areas
