    Position: Part-Time/Seasonal, May through August of 2020 Salary: Dependent Upon Qualifications Hours: Up to 29 hours per week The intern will receive compensation for $9.00 per hour for each scheduled shift Job Description 2019 S.C.P.D. Student Internship Program The Surf City Police Department is accepting applications for student internship jobs. The internship assists in augmenting the police department in beach patrols and certain other duties at the direction of a student internship supervisor. The internship is only open to students that are enrolled in an accredited college and/or university. Preference will be given to students that are majoring in criminal justice. Students interested in applying must complete an S.C.P.D. background application form and submit it for review. Applications can be downloaded and/or completed at www.surfcitync.gov/police Initial Requirements: Must be enrolled in an accredited college and/or university with a minimum G.P.A. of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale Must successfully pass S.C.P.D. Intern Interview Submit to a background investigation, fingerprint submission and successfully pass a Drug Test Sign a Release of Information form and a Confidentiality form Successfully pass American Red Cross C.P.R. class Must have valid Driver’s License Job Requirements: Successfully pass orientation and training program, including competency of operating an All Terrain Vehicle Be able to work rotating shifts that consist of 29-hour work weeks Work duties at the direction of an Internship Supervisor Be able to report fit for duty for each shift assigned Conform to department approved dress code Must have reliable transportation to report for duty Job Expectations: Compliance with all laws, ordinances, statutes, and regulations Compliance with all applicable S.C.P.D. policies and procedures Attendance at all assigned shifts, meetings, and functions of the S.C.P.D. At least satisfactory performance of all assigned activities and operations Representing the S.C.P.D. in a professional manner and deal with citizens with upmost courtesy Develop proficiencies as outlined in the Intern Program Manual Documenting hours worked and activities that is reviewed by Patrol Lieutenant Obligations of S.C.P.D.: S.C.P.D. will properly train and orient each intern for job expectations S.C.P.D. will document any necessary forms, documents, etc. that is needed by the intern S.C.P.D. will give necessary uniforms, equipment, and any other items that are required for job duties S.C.P.D. will successfully acclimate the intern to the field of Law Enforcement EMPLOYMENT DISQUALIFIERS Anyone or more of the following shall disqualify an applicant from further consideration for employment. CRIMINAL HISTORY • Any felony conviction • A misdemeanor conviction that either would prohibit certification or could result in suspension of certification by the North Carolina Training and Standards Commission. • Any individual that has been named respondent and/or defendant in an active domestic violence protective order (50B Order) issued by a judge of a court of competent jurisdiction. • Any individual convicted of any offense arising from domestic violence as defined by 18 U.S.C. Section 921(a). DRUG USE • The unlawful sale or distribution of any controlled substances. • The knowingly use of any Schedule I drug • The knowingly use of any illicit Schedule II-V within the eighty-four months (7 years) immediately preceding the date of application. • The knowingly use of any non-prescribed Controlled Substance will be reviewed on a case by case basis. • Possession or use of Marijuana or a derivative thereof within the twenty-four months (2 years) immediately preceding the date of application. TRAFFIC VIOLATIONS • Conviction in any jurisdiction of Driving Under the Influence of Drugs or Alcohol (D.U.I./D.W.I.) within the five (5) years immediately preceding the date of application. • Refusal to take a blood or breath test as required by the implied consent of any jurisdiction within the five (5) years immediately preceding the date of application. • Conviction of Eluding Police, Hit and Run, Vehicle Speed Competition or Death by Vehicle. • The suspension or revocation of driving privileges in any jurisdiction within the past five (5) years for any reason other than failure to pay fines and costs. OTHER • A Dishonorable Discharge from any military service. • Untruthfulness or the falsification of any application, certificate, credential, interview, test, or document associated with the application for this position. • Not being a United States Citizen. • Behavior is unsuitable or inappropriate for a Police Officer as determined by the Chief of Police and/or Designee. • Unstable job history as determined by the Chief of Police and/or Designee • Current unsatisfactory credit history rating as determined by the Chief of Police and/or Designee. Factors that will be reviewed include, but are not limited to, the following: -Known unsatisfied judgments at time of application other than traffic fines and costs. -Any arrears in child support or failure to pay child support.
