  • Responsibilities

    PURPOSE:  Develop, implement and manage health services for BGCB in collaboration with Massachusetts General Hospital to enhance the health and safety at all BGCB Clubs.

     

     

    Required Skills

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

     

    HEALTH POLICY AND PROCEDURES

    • Develop health policies, procedures, and best practices related to health and wellness including disease management, injury and illness prevention and management as well as providing oversight for existing policies to ensure they are up-to-date with current standards
    • Review, revise and implement emergency policies related to health and safety
    • Develop policy and/or procedures for the administration, safety and security of medications, first aid or health supplies and equipment
    • Oversee quality assurance, implementation of health policies and the development and facilitation of staff trainings on related health policies and procedures
    • Assist the Senior Director of Healthy Lifestyles in the formation of health program goals and objectives
    • Collaborate/cooperate with community providers and state agencies as needed to meet the health needs of club members
    • Implement and comply with policies established by federal and state law in the area of health services especially during summer camp

     

    PREVENTATIVE PRACTICES AND OVERSIGHT

    • Recommend and assist in implementing modifications of club programs to meet members’ health needs

    • Plan, develop and implement individualized health care plans for members with chronic health problems that require care while at the club, including the administration of medication

    • Provide trainings for staff on BGCB health policies or best practices, provide annual and summer camp staff trainings to include allergy and anaphylaxis management/EpiPen administration, medication administration, asthma management and health and safety education.

    • Assure member health requirements are up-to-date in collaboration with club staff (summer camp only)

    • Serve as the health care supervisor for licensed EEC school age child care programs and summer camps

    • Collaborate with community health care providers for summer camp programs

    • Orient and supervise summer camp nurses

    • Oversee necessary summer camp health preparations and regulations for BGCB summer camp sites

    • Prepare and maintain first aid kits for each club

    • Act as a liaison between clinical nursing instructors and the Clubs. Orientate nursing instructors and or students to Club culture and structure as well as assist with identifying areas of member health education needs.

    • In collaboration with the Senior Director of Healthy Lifestyles, oversee Club Health Coordinators, conduct bi-monthly meetings and maintain communication.

    • Manages the application of Mylan Pharmaceutical grant for EpiPen donations for Clubs.

     

    HEALTH PROMOTION AND EDUCATION:

    • Educates staff on common childhood health issues, provides educational materials for staff and families

    • Serves as a health resource to local club staff and management

    • Acts as a resource in promoting health careers

    • Responsible for relevant program delivery based on skill set and expertise (e.g. sexual health training for teens and puberty education for 8-13 year olds)

     

    OTHER:

    • Maintains positive relations with community partners and assists in establishing connections with community partners and Club Leadership.

    • Attends individual club staff meetings on a regular basis

    • Effectively communicates with colleagues, club members, parents and management

    • Reports regularly in writing to MGH and the Senior Director of Health Lifestyles

    • Prepares quarterly and annual reports of activities

    • Regular travel between clubs and to activities as neededà CAR REQUIRED (mileage to be reimbursed)

    • Other duties as assigned

    Required Experience

    QUALIFICATIONS:          

    • Graduate of a Nursing Program approved by the Massachusetts Board of Nursing, current registered nurse license in Massachusetts
    • Minimum 3-5 years’ direct experience developing and delivering health programs for youth; community health and or school nursing experience preferred
    • Experience teaching sexual health and hygiene preferred
    • Knowledge of professional and legal requirements
    • Knowledge of child growth and development
    • Techniques in health counseling/guidance
    • Ability to conduct member/staff/parent presentations and general public speaking
    • Ability to provide emergency care/assessment (summer camp especially)
    • Ability to effectively use local resources
    • Ability to covey medical information to the general public in an easy to understand manner
    • Ability to work with individuals from a variety of backgrounds
    • Ability to effectively establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with community partners
    • Strong commitment to the goals, mission and philosophy of BGCB and MGH
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills required
    • Basic computer skills including data entry and word-processing.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast paced environment
    • Well organized and self-starter
    • This is a part-time 20 hours a week position with the potential to be full-time for the right candidate.
    • Valid driver’s license and car required to travel between 11 clubs in the greater Boston area (mileage reimbursement)
