    SUMMARY:

    Dissection and dictation of gross description for Histologic/Cytologic surgical specimens. Ability to multi-task including troubleshooting and problem solving. Tasks are performed on a self-directed manner with minimal supervisory oversight.

     

    PURPOSE:

    The purpose of this document is to describe the general nature and level of work performed by personnel as classified; it is not intended to serve as an inclusive list of all responsibility associated with this position.

     

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:

    1. Responsible for assuring correct accessioning and numbering of all surgical specimens.

    2. Identifies specimens (and abnormalities) and determines appropriate sectioning technique under the general direction of a pathologist.

    3. Communicates and collaborates with surgical/operating room staff.

    4. Evaluates specimens and dictates gross descriptions according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

    5. Performs the technical preparations of intraoperative consultations (frozen sections, touch preps, gross examinations).

    6. Performs frozen sections.

    7. Takes photos of all pertinent specimens.

    8. Maintains grossing area including making sure the station is well stocked with appropriate supplies and instruments.

    9. Maintains departmental supplies and equipment. Fills out purchase orders for needed gross room supplies.

    10. Demonstrates financial responsibility and accountability through the effective and efficient use of resources in daily procedures.

    11. Complies with all Federal and State Inspection Agency’s protocols.

    12. Consults with pathologists about complex, unusual or difficult specimens.

    13. Must meet pre-determined performance metrics.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education/Experience:

    A Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university and successful completion of an accredited Pathologists’ Assistant program. Master’s Degree preferred.

     

    Language Ability:

    Must be able to read, write, speak and comprehend the English language.

     

    Math Ability:

    Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

     

    Reasoning Ability:

    Must have the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving concrete variables in standardized situations and demonstrates initiative, strong reasoning ability and good judgment.

     

    Computer Skills:

    Ability to use Laboratory Information System and various other software programs

     

    Certificates and Licenses:

    Certification by a recognized certifying agency for clinical laboratory professionals preferred (ASCP, ASMT, NCA, etc). Certifications for Pathology Assistants from the ASCP Board of Registry mandatory.
