    Summary – Traveling Controls Technician
As a Traveling Controls Technician, you’ll spearhead panel-upgrade and install projects that modernize and expand industrial control systems across our North American customer base. Your primary mission is to re-terminate and add I/O in tight control boxes, integrate safety switches, and commission variable-frequency drives (VFDs) — all within carefully planned maintenance windows that minimize downtime. Flights, mileage, lodging, and daily per-diem are covered, and every assignment is scheduled in advance so you can focus on high-impact technical work, not last-minute call-outs.

Responsibility Summary – Traveling Controls Technician

    • Pull, land, and label discrete and analog I/O wiring (24 VDC, 120 VAC, 4-20 mA, Ethernet) in compact enclosures while adhering to industrial wiring practices and UL 508A/NEC requirements.
    • Install and verify safety switches, safety relays, and e-stops; perform functional checks with on-site operations staff before restart.
    • Terminate, program-assist, and test VFDs up to 50 HP; confirm proper motor rotation, parameter sets, and interlock signals.
    • Coordinate with plant maintenance or controls engineers to isolate equipment, complete work, and restore operation inside designated shutdown windows (typically 1-2 hours).
    • Inspect existing panel layout; identify clearance, heat-dissipation, or wiring issues and propose corrective actions.
    • Travel to manufacturing plants, distribution centers, and process facilities per a rolling project calendar.
    • Maintain a neat, hazard-free workspace; comply with NFPA 70E arc-flash and company LOTO procedures at all times.
    • Capture as-built redlines, terminal torque readings, photos, and commissioning checklists on a company-issued tablet; submit digital reports daily.
    • Assist with inventory of ferrules, wire markers, terminal blocks, and spare VFDs; keep shared toolkits (crimpers, megger, oscilloscope) calibrated and ready.
    • Perform other controls-related duties as assigned by the Project Lead.

Qualification Summary – Traveling Controls Technician

    • Five (5)+ years’ hands-on experience wiring or retrofitting industrial control panels, PLC I/O, safety circuits, and VFDs.
    • Working knowledge of IEC/NEC standards, UL 508A layout guidelines, and best practices for high-density panel wiring.
    • Ability to read and mark up electrical schematics, P&IDs, and VFD parameter sheets.
    • Demonstrated success executing time-critical upgrades during scheduled shutdowns.
    • Familiarity with Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or comparable PLC/VFD platforms a plus.
    • Valid driver’s license and willingness to fly and drive to project sites throughout the United States
    • Capability to lift 50 lbs, bend/kneel in cramped cabinets, climb ladders, and work in hot or cold industrial environments.
    • Basic proficiency with tablets/laptops for documentation, remote meetings, and time entry.
    • OSHA 10 or NFPA 70E training preferred (company-provided if not current).
    • Strong communication skills and a safety-first mindset.
