    Job Description

    The Fusion Technician is responsible for performing thermoplastic pipe fusion work in support of pipeline installation projects. This role includes operating and maintaining specialized fusion equipment, preparing and aligning pipe materials, and ensuring fusion joints meet applicable quality and industry standards. The Fusion Technician works closely with field crews to support safe, efficient installations and maintains accurate documentation of fusion parameters and inspections.

    This is a travel-based, field-focused position requiring extended time away from home while supporting pipeline installation projects.

    Salary

    $ 60,000-$100,000 annually, based on experience

    Key Responsibilities

    • Fusion Operations: Perform various welding techniques including butt fusion, electrofusion to join pipes and fittings.
    • Equipment Management: Set up, operate, and maintain specialized fusion equipment, including McElroy machines. Perform routine cleaning, troubleshooting, and repair of defective components.
    • Pipe Preparation: Measure, cut, and align pipe sections accurately, ensuring all fusion surfaces are clean and dry prior to thermofusion.
    • Quality Control: Conduct visual inspections and air tests on fusion joints to identify defects and ensure they meet industry standards (e.g., ISO or ASTM standards).
    • Documentation: Maintain detailed fusion logs, recording parameters such as temperature, pressure, and cooling times for project records.
    • Field Support: Transport equipment to job sites and assist with field operations, including trenching, pipe installation, and operating heavy equipment such as forklifts and skid steers.

    Work Environment and Location

    • Home office locations include Durango, CO and Farmington, NM.
    • Work is primarily performed outdoors at active job sites, often in varying weather conditions and around moving vehicles and mechanical equipment.
    • This is a travel-intensive role requiring extended assignments on the road, often up to several months at a time, to support installation projects.
    • Travel to job sites may be by automobile and/or airplane, with time spent away from the home office as needed to complete installations.
    • The typical work schedule averages 10-hour days, 6 days per week
    • Company-provided lodging while traveling
    • $59 daily per diem for meals and incidentals

    Requirements

    • Certifications: Valid fusion certifications preferred or required, such as those from the Plastics Pipe Institute (PPI) or manufacturer-specific programs (e.g., McElroy University).
    • Technical Knowledge: Working knowledge of material properties, SDR (Standard Dimension Ratio) ratings, and the impact of environmental conditions on the fusion process.
    • Licensing: Valid driver’s license with a clean motor vehicle record (MVR) required for equipment transportation.

    Preferred Experience

    • Most roles require 1–5 years of experience in HDPE fusion, pipefitting, or general construction.
    • International work/traveling experience is also a plus.

    Physical Demands

    • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
    • Ability to lift and carry up to 50–75 lbs.
    • Ability to work in confined spaces.

    Education

    • High School diploma, GED or equivalent.
    • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
    • Preferred candidates will have more education and work experience.
