    SUMMARY:

    The Assistant Medical Director - Genomics works under the supervision and guidance of the Genomics Medical Director and Associate Medical Director- Genomics, to ensure the effective administration, coordination and communication of all business, technical and clinical aspects of the Genomics laboratories (inherited disease, molecular oncology, and cytogenetics). This role is responsible for assisting the Genomics Medical Director and the Associate Medical Director - Genomics in the technical and quality activities of the Genomics laboratories. This individual will also be responsible for interpreting, recording and reporting test results promptly, accurately and proficiently, and for assuring compliance with all applicable regulations.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.

    1. Under the supervision of the Genomics Medical Director and the Associate Medical Director - Genomics, generates clinical reports and signs out clinical molecular genetic and clinical cytogenetic reports related to clinical analyses performed in the Genomics laboratory.
    2. Analyzes genetic data generated during clinical testing to ensure high quality, accurate results and, in collaboration with the Genomics Medical Director and Associate Medical Director - Genomics, provides guidance to managers, technical specialists, and technologists to resolve issues or inconsistencies with the data.
    3. Interprets genetic sequence variants using scientific literature, population databases, functional analysis, and other applicable resources and classifies these variants according to ACMG and related guidelines.
    4. Provides consultation for referring physicians and genetic counselors regarding genetic test selection, test specifications, test limitations, sequence variant interpretation, and clarification of test results.
    5. Assists in the design, development and implementation of assays critical to corporate strategies and client requirements. Assists in the selection of test methodologies that are appropriate for clinical use. Investigates and assesses new technologies within designated discipline.
    6. Collaborates with the Genomics Medical Director, Associate Medical Director - Genomics, pathologists and other physicians on the medical necessity of planned assay development.
    7. Halts casework; recalls reports; investigates nonconformance; develops, documents and reviews corrective actions; reviews internal and external audit documents; and restarts casework in the event of problems reported by the quality manager, examiners, or technologists.
    8. Assists in the evaluation and documentation of test and method validations used by the laboratory and proposes new or modified analytical procedures. Modifies and validates procedural changes as appropriate, in conjunction with the Genomics Medical Director and Associate Medical Director - Genomics.
    9. Assists the Genomics Medical Director and Associate Medical Director - Genomics, with reviewing and approving the training, quality assurance, and proficiency testing programs at the Genomics laboratories.
    10. Contributes to scientific research and literature to include grant writing, preparation of manuscripts for technical journals, and presentations at scientific meetings.
    11. Writes and updates the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) with the assistance of the Genomics Medical Director, Associate Medical Director - Genomics, and the quality manager and assists with the annual review of the SOPs.
    12. Assists in the preparation and management of written records of division performance, both financial and clinical.
    13. Maintains library of relevant materials for employees. Teaches laboratory staff through lectures, journal club presentations and one on one and group education sessions.
    14. Carries out contract and research goals of the Genomics laboratories.
    15. May fulfill the function of section director/technical supervisor for regulatory requirements, as appropriate.
    16. Assists in managing human resources functions such as hiring, training, mentoring, and developing personnel.

    Education/Experience:

    Doctoral degree in an appropriate discipline. Must be qualified to manage and direct the laboratory personnel and performance of laboratory testing in accordance with all accrediting bodies, such as CLIA, CAP, PA DOH, MD DOH, NY DOH, CA DOH as it applies to Genomics testing.

    Language Ability

    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents. High ability to interact with a wide variety of internal and external customers in complex and sensitive circumstances. High level of interpersonal and communication skills necessary. Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style. Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management.

    Math Ability:

    Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, equations, and permutations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability, validity and analysis.

    Reasoning Ability:

    Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, etc.) in its most difficult phases. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables

    Computer Skills:

    To perform this job successfully, an individual should be proficient in using Microsoft Office products in addition to various other software products including the Laboratory Information System. Working knowledge of DNA Analysis Software.
