  • Responsibilities

    OCOM HOSPITAL-FLOAT POOL

    LOCATION: 8100 S. WALKER, OKC, OK 73139 & 5925 NW 139TH ST, OKLAHOMA CITY, OK

    STATUS: PER DIEM (1-2 DAYS PER WEEK OR MONTH)

    NO HOLIDAYS, NO WEEKEND (DECEMBER EXCEPTION), NO CALL

    KEY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    PRE-OP:

    1. Prepares pre-operatively for patient admission according to facility policies and procedures.
    2. Demonstrates knowledge of drug usage, their actions and side effects, interaction with anesthesia agents and expected patient outcomes.
    3. Recognizes emergency situation, responds quickly and efficiently following policy and procedure, ACLS, physician orders or emergency plan to prevent adverse patient outcomes.
    4. Maintains knowledge and adheres to policies/procedure, care standards for Pre-operative care.
    5. Ensures patient meets admit requirements before patient goes for surgery:
    6. Provides verbal instructions to family or responsible party during pre-operative period about the whole surgical experience.
    7. Documents that assessments, interventions and patient outcomes are performed according to policy and procedure and facility standards.
    8. Supplies/medications are rotated so that outdates are at a minimum.

    PACU:

    1. Provides care to post-surgical patients in the PACU according to policy and procedure and care standards.

    2. Demonstrates knowledge of equipment, including proper usage, troubleshooting, and proper removal from patient care.

    3. Maintains knowledge of medications expected patient outcomes post-surgery/recovery, and anticipated complications.

    4. Recognizes emergency situation, responds quickly and efficiently following policy and procedure, ACLS, physician orders or emergency plan to prevent adverse patient outcomes.

    5. Documents of all assessments, interventions and patient outcomes are performed according to policy and procedure and Hospital standards.

    6. Completes all documentation to ensure the availability of accurate and up to date information in accordance with established standards.

    7. Provides verbal and written instructions to family or responsible party for home care including emergency contact numbers, general instructions, and physician specific instructions.

    8. Ensures that follow-up call is placed to patient and responses recorded appropriately.Supplies/medications are rotated so that outdates are at a minimum.

    9. Demonstrates continued competence in assessing, treating, and caring for individuals based upon age-specific needs utilizing a developmental perspective.

      PHASE II RECOVERY:

    10. Maintain patient’s airway.

    11. Monitor respiratory and circulatory status by monitoring patient vital signs every 15 minutes until stable and discharged home.

    12. Assess level of consciousness and promote reactivity. Rate according to class.

    13. Assess operative sites, invasive lines, and dressing.

    14. Administer medications as ordered.

    15. Implement nursing care plan.

    16. Discontinue patient intravenous line when patient has been stabilized and the Aldrete score has been met.

    17. Give postoperative instructions according to doctor’s orders.

    18. Communicate with patient, family, surgeon, anesthesiologist, and facility staff.

    19. Serve as a liaison between patient family and patient care area.

    20. Maintain continuity by reporting on patient condition, status, within the post-operative area or changes in the caregiver.

    21. Monitor environment and patient safety, comfort, traffic pattern, team attire, product, and team efficiency.

    22. If indicated, assist in the transfer of patient designated room.

    23. Complete post-operative calls.

    24. Discharge patient according to physicians orders and take to curb in a wheelchair.

    Required Skills Required Experience

    LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATION:

    1. BCLS, if not current, certification within 90 days of hire.
    2. PALS/ACLS trained, must obtain PALS/ACLS training within 6 months of hire.
    3. Requires a degree or diploma from an accredited school of nursing with active registration from the board of nursing registration and nurse education, state of Oklahoma. EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

    EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

    1. Minimum of one-year experience in PACU, Emergency, or ICU preferred.
    2. One-year Pre-operative experience in surgery center or facility setting preferred.
